him bad.

“What matters,” I said, “is what you do with the wanting.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

This time the phrase did not bother me.

Because his behavior had finally begun to support it.

I placed his counsel instruction beside Thomas's first deed.

Two generations of documents.

Thomas: Your mother does not know I am doing this.

Eric: Do not assert ownership.

The difference was only a few lines.

It had taken decades to learn.

Before Eric left, he stopped at the front door.

“Six months still?”

“For what?”

“The trust decision.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Okay.”

After he drove away, I stood alone in the foyer.

Thomas's photograph remained on the table.

His ring in my pocket.

His mistakes in boxes.

His apologies in envelopes.

His son trying, finally, to become someone who could want without taking.

The house was quiet.

Mine.

Not because Eric surrendered it.

Not because Thomas eventually wrote the right deed.

Because for the first time, everyone involved was beginning to respect that the decision about what happened to Willow Lane next belonged to the person who actually owned it.

Me.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Please tell me there isn't a third deed.”

“No.”

“Good.”

“There is, however, a final trust review issue.”

I closed my eyes.

“What?”

“We completed the asset reconciliation.”

“And?”

“After correcting your shares, settling Raymond's claim, accounting for Mara's equity purchase, and removing disputed assets, Thomas's succession trust is smaller than originally stated.”

“I expected that.”

“There is enough.”

“For Eric?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough that the question is no longer whether he will be financially secure.”

“What is the question?”

Rebecca paused.

“Whether you want to exercise the authority Thomas gave you to accelerate, delay, or permanently restrict his access.”

I looked toward the driveway where Eric's car had disappeared.

“How soon do I have to decide?”

“You don't.”

That answer surprised me.

“The trust permits annual review.”

“So I can wait.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“There is one more thing.”

“Of course.”

“Thomas left a final instruction to the trustee.”

“Another letter?”

“No.”

“What?”

“A single sentence in the trust schedule.”

“Read it.”

Rebecca did.

Do not reward Eric for appearing changed. Reward only what time proves.

I closed my eyes.

Thomas had understood the hardest part.

So had I.

The next stage would not be decided by one noble choice about a deed.

Or one month of work.

Or one smaller apartment.

Or one honest conversation.

Eric had learned how to surrender an advantage.

Now he had to learn how to live without applause for doing it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: The First Year Without Thomas Taught Eric That Change Was Hardest When Nobody Was Watching or Promising Him Anything in Return

Rebecca refused to speculate.
