strong.

Authority boundaries improving.

She recommended continuation.

Eric read it.

Signed.

No complaint.

Then asked for more warehouse rotation.

Mara nearly fell out of her chair.

“Why?”

“I don't know enough about inventory.”

“That has never stopped you from having opinions.”

“I am trying something new.”

“What?”

“Knowing first.”

She told me that line later.

I laughed for a full minute.

Meanwhile, the employee ownership study began.

Anonymous employee surveys.

Interviews.

Financial modeling.

The response surprised me.

Many employees wanted profit participation.

Fewer wanted voting shares.

Ownership sounded attractive until people understood illiquidity, governance, and risk.

Again, wanting something and understanding it were different.

Mara's three-percent purchase moved toward approval.

The insurance structure could fund part of the purchase, but she insisted on contributing her own capital too.

“Why?”

“Because I want to feel it.”

“The risk?”

“Yes.”

I understood.

Gifted ownership can feel abstract.

Purchased ownership carries consequence.

The board approved subject to final documents.

When Eric heard, he walked into Mara's office.

I happened to be nearby.

“Congratulations.”

She looked suspicious.

“That's it?”

“Yes.”

“You aren't going to ask whether this affects your future?”

He paused.

Then smiled.

“I thought about it.”

“Of course you did.”

“But no.”

“No what?”

“No question.”

Mara studied him.

“Thank you.”

He left.

She looked at me through the glass.

I kept walking.

No commentary.

Let moments stand.

Two days later, Claire agreed to meet Eric.

Elena arranged lunch at a café.

I was not invited.

Good.

Not everything required me.

Eric told me afterward only one thing.

“She is smarter than me.”

“She's sixteen.”

“I know.”

“That worries you?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“It gives me hope for the family.”

I laughed.

Then he became serious.

“She asked why Grandpa Thomas never introduced us.”

“What did you say?”

“The truth.”

“Which was?”

“I think he was afraid I'd make it about money.”

I nodded.

“What did she say?”

“She said, ‘Would you have?’”

I smiled.

“And?”

“I said yes.”

Good.

“Then she asked if I still would.”

“What did you say?”

“No.”

“Was that true?”

Eric considered.

“I noticed the thought.”

“What thought?”

“How much Dad spent on her school.”

There it was.

“And?”

“I didn't ask.”

“That is not the same as not thinking it.”

“I know.”

“Thinking is allowed.”

He looked relieved.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Dad made me feel like having the thought meant I was already bad.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“What you do after the thought matters.”

Eric nodded slowly.

That was another lesson Thomas had learned late.

Control of behavior mattered more than pretending impulses did not exist.

The ownership settlement documents were scheduled for signing Friday.

Mine finalized.

Elena's finalized.

Mara's purchase nearly complete.

The company history corrected.

It felt as though the worst might finally be behind us.

Then Laura called.

Not about company records.

About Thomas's personal notebook.

She had traced Claire's promise through his correspondence and found a reference to another document.

“What document?”

“A deed.”

My stomach tightened.

“To what?”

“Willow Lane.”

I stood.

“My house?”

“Yes.”

“What about it?”

“Thomas apparently executed a deed eight years ago.”

“To whom?”

“That is the problem.”

“What problem?”

“The deed was never recorded.”

My hands went cold.

“Who is named?”

Laura hesitated.

“Eric.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Then she added:

“But Thomas signed another deed three weeks later.”

“To whom?”

“You.”

I stared.

“Which one is valid?”

“That depends on delivery.”

The house trust we had been arguing over might not even control the house if Thomas had already attempted to transfer title years earlier.

“Why would he deed it to Eric and then to me?”

“I don't know.”

“Where are the originals?”

“One appears to be in Thomas's old safe-deposit inventory.”

“And the other?”

“Missing.”

I felt the familiar ground shift.

Willow Lane.

The one asset I thought had finally become simple.

Mine.

Maybe had been the site of another abandoned decision.

And if Thomas had ever delivered the first deed to Eric, the entire conflict over the house could become legally different from everything we believed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 28: Two Conflicting Deeds to Willow Lane Forced Eric to Choose Between a
