agreement.

And one photograph.

Thomas.

Raymond.

Me.

Outside the first warehouse.

I had forgotten it existed.

On the back, Raymond had written:

Three owners. One truck. No sleep.

My throat tightened.

There it was.

The company story before it was edited.

Not Thomas and Eleanor alone.

Raymond too.

Elena sat.

“I don't want fifteen percent.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“The record corrected.”

That was exactly what I wanted.

“And financially?”

She paused.

“Something fair.”

“Define fair.”

“I can't yet.”

Rebecca nodded.

“That is reasonable.”

Elena looked at Eric.

“I don't want your inheritance.”

He answered quietly.

“I don't know what my inheritance is anymore.”

For the first time, she smiled faintly.

“Good.”

He almost smiled back.

Then she took out a sealed envelope.

My pulse quickened.

“Thomas gave me this three weeks ago.”

My breath caught.

“Another one?”

“Yes.”

“Who is it for?”

She turned it over.

My name.

ELEANOR.

Thomas's handwriting.

Of course.

Elena pushed it across the table.

“He told me not to give it to you unless you discovered Raymond's certificate.”

I stared at the envelope.

Thomas had anticipated this too.

Not everything.

But enough.

“Did you read it?”

“No.”

I opened it.

Three pages.

The first line:

Ellie, if you have reached Raymond's part of the story, then you finally know the worst thing I did before Eric became old enough to copy me.

I stopped.

Eric closed his eyes.

Thomas continued.

I took five percent from you because I convinced myself the company needed me to have it.

You said no.

I did it anyway.

There was no defense.

No softer phrasing.

I kept reading.

I intended to reverse it.

Then the company grew.

The value grew.

The embarrassment grew.

Eventually telling you meant admitting not only the original act but every year I let it continue.

So I kept waiting for a cleaner moment.

There was never one.

My eyes burned.

This letter was different from the others.

Less explanation.

More surrender.

The five percent is yours.

Not morally. Legally, if Rebecca can make it so.

If the estate must compensate you, it should.

If doing that reduces what Eric receives, that is not you taking from him.

It is me failing to leave him what was never mine.

Eric stared at the page.

I continued.

Raymond's story must be corrected too.

I believed taking his shares protected the company.

Maybe it did.

That does not mean I treated him fairly.

Elena has documents I ignored because admitting she had a point threatened the story I had lived by.

My throat tightened.

Thomas had understood everything at the end.

The tragedy was not ignorance.

It was timing.

He had finally become honest when he had too little life left to repair what honesty revealed.

The final paragraph:

Do not spend the rest of your life cleaning my name.

Clean the records.

Protect what is yours.

Give Eric only what he can carry without becoming smaller under the weight of it.

And if he ever learns to ask instead of take, do not punish him forever for learning late.

I stopped.

Everyone was silent.

I read the last line alone.

I loved all of you badly sometimes.

I hope that does not erase the times I loved you well.

Thomas.

I lowered the pages.

For the first time since his death, I cried without anger.

Not because the anger was gone.

Because the letter did not ask me to erase it.

Thomas had finally stopped defending himself.

That made forgiveness possible someday.

Not today.

Someday.

Eric whispered, “Can I read it?”

I handed him the pages.

He read slowly.

Elena watched the wall.

Rebecca opened a clean legal pad.

“What now?”

I looked at her.

“We correct house?”

Rebecca waited.

“That remains mine.”

“Yes.”

“No discussion.”

“Yes.”

Eric looked up from Thomas's letter.

“I agree.”

I studied him.

He meant it.

For now.

Maybe one day that would become character.

I turned to Elena.

“If your father was wronged, I want to know exactly how.”

She nodded.

“And if Thomas was right about some parts?”

“I want to know that too.”

Good.

Truth, not revenge.

That was the only way forward.

Then Elena reached into her folder again.

“There is one last document.”

Rebecca sighed.

Even Elena smiled.

“I know.”

She placed it on the table.

A notarized statement from Raymond.

Dated six months after the disputed share transfer.

I read the first paragraph.

Raymond admitted he had been drinking heavily when he signed.

He also admitted he understood he was transferring the shares.

My pulse slowed.

Then the second paragraph.

Thomas promised in writing to hold five percent in trust for Raymond if Raymond remained sober for two years.

Everyone looked at one another.

“Five percent,” Eric whispered.

Elena nodded.

Raymond had lost fifteen.

Thomas promised a path back to five.

“Did Raymond stay sober?”

I asked.

Elena's face softened.

“For three years.”

My throat tightened.

“Did Thomas return the shares?”

“No.”

The answer landed heavily.

“Why?”

“According to Raymond, Thomas said the company could not handle another ownership change.”

Again.

The company needed.

Thomas decided.

Other people's rights waited.

I looked at the pattern.

My five percent.

Raymond's five percent.

Ten percent of the company potentially sitting inside Thomas's estate under questionable ownership.

A tenth of everything.

Enough to alter every inheritance calculation.

Enough to explain why Thomas spent his final weeks trying to prepare the ground.

Rebecca leaned back.

“This changes valuation significantly.”

Eric looked at me.

“Dad's estate may not own what we thought.”

“No.”

Elena said quietly, “That is what I've been trying to tell him for four years.”

I looked at Thomas's empty photograph spaces on the lobby wall.

The envelope had changed what Eric thought he owned.

Now the documents were changing what all of us thought Thomas had owned.

And for the first time, I understood the real work ahead.

Not dividing an estate.

Untangling a story.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: The Ten Percent Thomas Could Not Rightfully
