stood.<\/p>\n<p>This was different from Eric&#39;s secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Different from forged documents.<\/p>\n<p>Different from the house.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had directed money to a person none of us knew existed.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>A hidden beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>A search.<\/p>\n<p>A separate account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Thomas tell you never to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald&#39;s answer was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me you would eventually need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why don&#39;t I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he wanted to tell you himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later.<\/p>\n<p>Always later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he leave anything identifying her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have one address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca immediately asked for it.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald provided a town three hours away.<\/p>\n<p>No street, just an old mailing address.<\/p>\n<p>Laura began searching public records.<\/p>\n<p>I sat back down.<\/p>\n<p>My exhaustion had gone beyond feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Eric whispered, \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Dad had another family\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I was certain.<\/p>\n<p>Because I could not tolerate that possibility yet.<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found an Elena Whitmore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty-eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too old to be Thomas&#39;s child from our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Young enough to be something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAddress?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatches the town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelationship?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura searched further.<\/p>\n<p>Then her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer birth name wasn&#39;t Whitmore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor Ruiz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe changed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Whitmore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cWhy would she take Thomas&#39;s surname?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was adopted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura&#39;s face had gone very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Thomas&#39;s brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Not Thomas&#39;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>My body loosened.<\/p>\n<p>Then tightened again.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s older brother, Raymond, had died eleven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Childless.<\/p>\n<p>At least I thought he had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond adopted an adult daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecords indicate yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore he died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two years before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Raymond&#39;s final years badly.<\/p>\n<p>He lived in another state.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas handled much of the estate after his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t we know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric asked.<\/p>\n<p>I had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena is Raymond&#39;s legal daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s niece.<\/p>\n<p>Our niece by marriage.<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Whitmore family I had never met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was Thomas searching for her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked at the trust amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe because after Raymond died, they lost contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Laura found something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena sued Raymond&#39;s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaiming property had been improperly transferred before his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShares in Whitmore Distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat shares?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was already calculating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas always told me Raymond sold his early stake back to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>At least that was what Thomas told me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifteen percent originally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena claimed the transfer was invalid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case was dismissed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatute and lack of evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric asked quietly, \u201cSo she thinks part of the company should have been hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca corrected him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe once claimed her adoptive father owned part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the old ground shifting again.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had searched for her.<\/p>\n<p>Added her as a contingent beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>Transferred fifty thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Guilt?<\/p>\n<p>Settlement?<\/p>\n<p>Family obligation?<\/p>\n<p>Or because her claim was more credible than anyone knew?<\/p>\n<p>Laura opened another record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe currently owns a small business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFreight brokerage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>The Whitmore world again.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the progression.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>Company shares.<\/p>\n<p>Elena.<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden trust amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty thousand.<\/p>\n<p>This was not random.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Thomas find when he located her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Laura.<\/p>\n<p>She checked her screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t contact Elena yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman&#39;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Measured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this Eleanor Whitmore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Elena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told someone was searching my records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Laura.<\/p>\n<p>She looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get my number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same period he was finalizing everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat after he died, you might discover my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if that happened, I should tell you one thing before anyone else turned it into a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not trying to take your company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>He looked equally confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Thomas put you in the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he owed my father
