mine.

“Date?”

They told me.

Seven years earlier.

I remembered.

Thomas and I refinanced equipment while I was traveling.

I had signed a limited power of attorney.

“What was it for?”

Laura read the scope.

“Commercial equipment financing up to two hundred fifty thousand.”

“Not a personal guarantee.”

“No.”

“Not real estate.”

“No.”

“Then why attach it?”

Rebecca's voice hardened.

“To make the package look like Thomas had broader signing authority than he did.”

Again.

Fragments of truth arranged to imply something false.

I felt physically ill.

Eric stood.

“I need to leave.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because every time we find something Dad did for me, it gets worse for you.”

That was true.

But his leaving would not change it.

“Sit.”

He hesitated.

Then obeyed.

I looked at him.

“You need to see this.”

“Why?”

“Because if you spend the rest of your life believing your father protected you cleanly, you'll repeat him.”

His eyes filled.

I continued.

“He loved you.”

Eric nodded.

“He was afraid for you.”

Another nod.

“He did not know how to let you fail.”

Eric looked down.

“And eventually he started moving other people's boundaries instead.”

My signature.

Frank's.

Gerald's bank.

The company.

Me.

Laura received another message.

She looked at the screen.

“What now?” I asked.

“Gerald's counsel sent a second file.”

She opened it.

A typed memo from Gerald to himself.

Date: the day of the lender review.

It described Thomas's explanation.

Then one sentence stopped everything.

“Client states spouse is unaware of son's conduct and must remain unaware.”

I stared.

Gerald knew.

He had always known I did not agree.

That contradicted what he told me earlier.

Rebecca's expression turned cold.

“He lied to us.”

“Yes.”

Pierce said, “Or his recollection changed.”

Rebecca gave him a look.

“That's generous.”

Laura continued reading.

Another sentence.

“Agreed to treat authorization issue as internal documentation deficiency in exchange for consolidation of banking relationship.”

There it was.

Plainly.

Not my approval.

Not a misunderstanding.

A favor.

The bank got more business.

Thomas got silence.

And Gerald wrote it down.

I felt a strange calm.

For days, I had been afraid every new document would destroy another part of my marriage.

Instead, they were clarifying it.

Thomas had not become a different man in secret.

He had been the same man at his worst.

Protective.

Proud.

Persuasive.

Certain he could carry consequences for everyone.

The qualities that built the company had also enabled the cover-up.

Strength without limits becomes control.

Love without limits becomes rescue.

Rescue without truth becomes damage.

I finally understood what his last video had been trying to tell me.

He had not asked me to preserve his memory.

He had asked me not to.

Laura closed the memo.

Rebecca asked, “What do you want to do?”

I looked at Thomas's office.

Then Eric.

Then the pile of documents.

“The truth.”

Rebecca waited.

“All of it.”

“Meaning?”

“Correct the records.”

“Yes.”

“Disclose what needs disclosing.”

“Yes.”

“Even if it costs us money.”

“Yes.”

“Even if it damages Thomas's reputation.”

Rebecca paused.

“Yes.”

Eric looked at me.

“And me?”

I met his eyes.

“You too.”

He nodded.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text from Gerald.

One sentence.

There is something Thomas made me promise never to tell you unless the trust failed.

I showed Rebecca.

She read it.

“What trust?”

I asked.

She typed back before I could stop her.

Which trust?

Gerald replied almost immediately.

Not the business trust.

The first one.

Rebecca went still.

I stared at her.

“What first one?”

She looked genuinely confused.

“I don't know.”

Then Gerald sent another message.

Ask what happened to the money from the sale of the lake property.

<a
