Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked toward him on screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That I believed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lender accepted the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe false file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the company refinanced later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weight of it settled over me.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had not simply hidden a son&#39;s theft inside the family.<\/p>\n<p>He had used his reputation, relationships and authority to keep outsiders from seeing enough to force the truth.<\/p>\n<p>He had treated the company like an extension of his role as father.<\/p>\n<p>Anything could be bent if bending it saved Eric.<\/p>\n<p>Until, years later, he finally understood that salvation without accountability had become another form of harm.<\/p>\n<p>Laura asked, \u201cWhere is Gerald Ames now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wrote the name down.<\/p>\n<p>Another interview.<\/p>\n<p>Another layer.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>He had been silent for several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t know about Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t know Thomas considered forcing you to resign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t know how far he went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Dad just fixed the books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly, for the first time, I saw something unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s concealment had not only protected Eric.<\/p>\n<p>It had deprived him of knowing the true cost of his behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Eric had thought his father moved numbers, arranged repayment, and kept the secret.<\/p>\n<p>He had not known Thomas risked lender relationships, company records, my signature, Frank&#39;s integrity, Colleen&#39;s trust, perhaps more.<\/p>\n<p>The floor had risen beneath Eric so quietly he never saw who strained to hold it.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cThis is what rescue costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll those years, you thought Thomas fixed things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gestured toward the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut every fix moved the damage somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Into my name.<\/p>\n<p>Into the books.<\/p>\n<p>Into employees&#39; silence.<\/p>\n<p>Into lender favors.<\/p>\n<p>Into Thomas&#39;s fear.<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I do with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was different from his earlier questions.<\/p>\n<p>Not What do I get?<\/p>\n<p>Not What happens to the house?<\/p>\n<p>What do I do with that?<\/p>\n<p>I answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stop asking other people to carry it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca&#39;s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>She read a message.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura&#39;s team found the backdated board consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at Laura.<\/p>\n<p>She opened her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>The document appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Date: three days before Redleaf&#39;s first payment.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>Frank&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>A resolution granting temporary vendor approval authority to Eric during my absence.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Frank.<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign this document?\u201d Laura asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you recognize where the signature came from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face went gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the warehouse lease renewal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another reused signature.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had done exactly what Eric did to me.<\/p>\n<p>Copied authenticity from one place and pasted it onto another.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence was no longer only Colleen&#39;s memory.<\/p>\n<p>It was a pattern in the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then Laura enlarged the bottom of the board consent.<\/p>\n<p>A line none of us had noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared by: E. Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>Not my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Just my typed name.<\/p>\n<p>But enough to suggest I had drafted the document.<\/p>\n<p>I felt anger rise so sharply I had to stand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not prepare that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know,\u201d Laura said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut anyone reading it later wouldn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had placed me inside the false record again.<\/p>\n<p>Not just as witness.<\/p>\n<p>As preparer.<\/p>\n<p>He had made the concealment look like my work.<\/p>\n<p>I could no longer tell myself he had merely been frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Fear explained.<\/p>\n<p>It did not erase.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Laura said, \u201cIt may be Gerald. I left him a message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor Whitmore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An elderly male voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Gerald Ames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand people are asking questions about Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded for me to continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose they should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened during the Redleaf review?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was silent for so long I thought the call had dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThomas asked me to look the other way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission came without defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he told me his son had made a terrible mistake and he could repair it without destroying the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you get in return?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the bank get?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that part of the deal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca wrote something quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I asked the question that mattered most to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Thomas tell you I knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald&#39;s answer came slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told you I knew about Eric&#39;s theft?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you had agreed the matter should stay private while repayment was underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used my name to persuade you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood the full shape of Thomas&#39;s fear.<\/p>\n<p>He had not merely hidden truth from me.<\/p>\n<p>He had invoked me.<\/p>\n<p>Used my reputation for caution, financial discipline and loyalty to make his concealment credible.<\/p>\n<p>He had borrowed my integrity without permission.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cWhat else did he tell you I had agreed to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you would personally guarantee the refinancing if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>She went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never agreed to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas a guarantee executed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief came.<\/p>\n<p>Briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gerald added, \u201cBut Thomas drafted one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it have my signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw a signed copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction was suddenly everything.<\/p>\n<p>Before we ended the call, Gerald agreed to speak formally with counsel.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone down.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Eric stood.<\/p>\n<p>His face was white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Dad protected me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears filled his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used Mom to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence broke something open in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Because it was true.<\/p>\n<p>And because Eric, finally, was not centered inside it.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot for the money. Not just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor making him think he had to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas made his own choices.<\/p>\n<p>Eric made his.<\/p>\n<p>I made mine.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibility could be shared without being diluted.<\/p>\n<p>When I opened my eyes, I said, \u201cYou did not make your father forge records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I gave him the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he chose how to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you should have been told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>For once, there was no argument.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca closed her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stop here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one resisted.<\/p>\n<p>As everyone gathered papers, Laura remained at the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Then she frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She zoomed into the metadata on the backdated board consent.<\/p>\n<p>The file creation date appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not two years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Three years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura checked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means this document may have existed before Thomas discovered Redleaf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Eric went still.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura&#39;s voice became careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the metadata is intact, the file was created nearly eleven months before the first unauthorized Redleaf transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it wasn&#39;t created to cover Eric&#39;s theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>He looked equally confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it created for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the underlying system logs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But another possibility had already formed.<\/p>\n<p>If Thomas prepared a document giving Eric temporary vendor authority almost a year before Redleaf existed, then the concealment might not have begun after the theft.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Thomas had been planning a transfer of authority long before.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the document had a legitimate original purpose and was later repurposed.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe someone else had altered it.<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the date.<\/p>\n<p>Then Laura said, \u201cThere is one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe file wasn&#39;t created on Thomas&#39;s computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She checked the user account.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28587\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Document Created Under My Login Forced Us to Ask Whether Thomas Had Hidden More Than a Cover-Up Inside the Company<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca insisted we interview Colleen formally.
