“Why?”

“Because Dad told me the condition was telling you everything.”

I breathed slowly.

“When?”

“Tomorrow?”

“Rebecca's office.”

“All right.”

The next morning, Rebecca arranged a conference room.

Pierce arrived with Eric.

Samuel Pierce was in his late fifties, lean, silver-haired, and far quieter than I expected from a lawyer Eric had chosen.

He shook my hand.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

“Mr. Pierce.”

“I understand this is difficult.”

“That may be the safest sentence anyone has said this week.”

One corner of his mouth moved.

Rebecca sat beside me.

Pierce sat beside Eric.

The balance was formal.

I disliked it.

I also understood why it was necessary.

Eric placed a sealed envelope on the table.

Thomas's handwriting read:

ERIC — OPEN ONLY WHEN YOU ARE READY TO STOP HIDING.

I had seen enough of my husband's labels to know the writing was genuine.

Rebecca photographed the sealed envelope.

Pierce did the same.

Then Eric opened it.

Inside were five handwritten pages.

He read the first silently.

His face changed immediately.

“What?” I asked.

Pierce said, “Take your time.”

Eric looked at me.

“He wrote this the week after Redleaf.”

“Read it.”

He swallowed.

Then began.

“Eric, what you did was theft.”

His voice shook.

“I am writing that word because every softer word I tried felt like another lie.”

Eric stopped.

Pierce waited.

He continued.

“I have made a decision your mother may never forgive.”

I felt my back straighten.

“I am not telling her yet.”

There it was.

Thomas's choice.

Documented at the moment.

“I am giving you one chance to repair what you did before I bring her into it.”

Eric's voice cracked.

“If you repay every dollar, end the false vendor, give me every document, and tell me the full truth, I will decide when Eleanor is told.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She was reading along from a copied image.

Eric continued.

“This is not because you deserve protection.”

A pause.

“It is because your mother has carried enough of this family.”

My throat tightened.

Thomas had thought silence reduced my burden.

He never understood that hidden burdens still alter the weight of a marriage.

“I am afraid this will break her faith in you,” Eric read.

“More selfishly, I am afraid it will break her faith in me.”

There it was again.

Not speculation.

Confession.

Eric's eyes filled.

He continued.

“I should not be helping you hide this.”

“Then don't,” I whispered before I could stop myself.

Eric looked up.

I shook my head.

“Keep going.”

He read.

“If I do this, you must understand what it costs me.”

I almost laughed.

Costs him.

Thomas still wrote as though the main cost belonged to the person concealing the truth.

Then the next line surprised me.

“And what it may cost your mother without her consent.”

He had known.

Even then.

“I am risking her name because you used her signature.”

Eric stopped again.

The room was silent.

Pierce leaned toward him.

“Continue if you can.”

Eric nodded.

“I am risking the company because I am afraid an investigation will destroy your future.”

His voice dropped.

“I am risking my marriage because I cannot bear to tell Eleanor that our son did this under our roof, in our company, while we were both congratulating ourselves for raising him well.”

My eyes burned.

No anger could erase how well I knew the man behind those words.

His shame.

His love.

His arrogance.

His terror.

All woven together.

Eric continued.

“So here is what happens next.”

He read the conditions.

Repayment schedule.

No access to finance systems.

No vendor authority.

Personal financial counseling.

Monthly disclosure to Thomas.

Immediate termination if any additional dishonesty occurred.

“And when you are stable,” Eric read, “you tell your mother.”

He stopped.

I stared.

“You agreed?”

Eric nodded.

“Then why didn't you?”

“I kept waiting.”

“Thomas kept waiting too.”

“Yes.”

Pierce said quietly, “How long did repayment take?”

“Almost two years.”

“And you still did not disclose.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Eric looked at me.

“Because by then Dad was sick.”

“That was later.”

“I repaid, maybe it didn't matter anymore.”

I leaned back.

There was the same logic again.

Repair the number.

Erase the act.

Except some things did not become untrue when balances reached zero.

“What about the remaining thirty-six thousand?”

Pierce glanced at him.

Eric answered.

“That was I fail this agreement by hiding longer than I should, that failure is mine.

I closed my eyes.

Thomas had written the truth.

Then failed to follow it.

Eric read the final paragraph.

If you ever use my protection as proof that what you did was acceptable, understand this clearly: I am not protecting your innocence.
