Thomas or Eric on operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo your approval should have been required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere there exceptions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmergency vendors under five thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much was Redleaf&#39;s first invoice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She already knew.<\/p>\n<p>I could tell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-two thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the vendor could not legally have been activated without your approval under company policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She made a note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you approve it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you recognize the signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt resembles mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it yours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question hurt.<\/p>\n<p>I understood why she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can identify the source image Eric says he used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat helps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the glass where Eric stood finishing his call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas he admitted copying it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo witnesses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word sounded brutal.<\/p>\n<p>Good evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Not good conduct.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Eric came back inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPierce wants me to say nothing else until he arrives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cListen to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, everyone agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Eric wrote down locations where older Redleaf materials might exist.<\/p>\n<p>Then he left.<\/p>\n<p>Before he reached the door, he turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry about your signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he left.<\/p>\n<p>Laura waited until the door closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitmore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That quickly.<\/p>\n<p>She turned her laptop toward me.<\/p>\n<p>An old email.<\/p>\n<p>From Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>To Eric.<\/p>\n<p>Subject: REDLEAF FILE.<\/p>\n<p>The date was two days after Thomas discovered the transfers.<\/p>\n<p>The message was short.<\/p>\n<p>Put the signed finance approval into the master vendor file before Friday review. I do not want another set of eyes on this until I decide how to handle it.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had written it.<\/p>\n<p>No ambiguity.<\/p>\n<p>No memory dispute.<\/p>\n<p>No Eric interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had instructed him to conceal the irregularity.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Until I decide how to handle it.<\/p>\n<p>He had treated truth like an item he could postpone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened Friday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura was already searching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lender compliance review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoutine covenant check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould the lender have examined vendor files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if they had discovered the missing approval?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey might have expanded the review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mara.<\/p>\n<p>She had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe refinanced six months later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>I turned back to Laura.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the lender rely on records that included this agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca answered this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we have a more serious disclosure issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The company Thomas built.<\/p>\n<p>The company I helped build.<\/p>\n<p>The company Eric thought he should inherit.<\/p>\n<p>All of it might have carried a buried legal risk because Thomas feared what the truth would do to our family.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more protecting anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means if the record shows my husband concealed something, write that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it shows my son stole, write that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it shows I signed something I should have questioned, write that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said softly, \u201cEleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo edited version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No more family legend.<\/p>\n<p>No more softening.<\/p>\n<p>No more moving the line.<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is how we work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigation continued into late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>At four seventeen, Stephen entered carrying an old banker box from off-site storage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound another Redleaf folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were duplicate invoices, handwritten notes and a yellow legal sheet in Thomas&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>She read it once.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should see this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>At the top Thomas had written:<\/p>\n<p>IF ELEANOR FINDS OUT BEFORE ERIC REPAYS, I WILL HAVE TO TELL HER I APPROVED THE COVER-UP.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>Below them was another line.<\/p>\n<p>She may leave me.<\/p>\n<p>My throat closed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had not hidden the truth because he thought I was weak.<\/p>\n<p>He had hidden it because he was afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid of me.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid of losing me.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid that the moral authority he carried so confidently at work would collapse inside our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath that, written smaller, was one final sentence:<\/p>\n<p>But if I keep hiding it, I may lose her anyway.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28584\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Thomas\u2019s Private Notes Showed He Feared Losing Me More Than Losing the Company, Yet Fear Had Still Made Him Choose Secrecy<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds, nobody moved.
