closed his eyes.

When he opened them, something had changed.

“Yes.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

“There is one more thing about Redleaf.”

“How much?”

“It's not money.”

“What then?”

“A document.”

“What document?”

“One of the fake consulting agreements.”

I waited.

“What about it?”

Eric swallowed.

“I didn't sign Thomas's name.”

Relief almost came.

Then I saw his face.

“Whose name did you sign?”

He looked at me.

“Yours.”

The words did not make sense at first.

Then they did.

“You forged my signature?”

“Yes.”

The conference room became silent.

“How many times?”

“Once.”

“Why?”

“The vendor setup required approval from finance.”

“And I was finance.”

“Yes.”

I thought of twelve years of records.

Of invoices I had approved.

Of my signature appearing on documents Thomas had hidden from me.

“Where is the original?”

“I thought Dad destroyed it.”

“Thought?”

“He told me he had.”

My phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered without taking my eyes from Eric.

“What?”

Her voice was urgent.

“The forensic accountants just called.”

I stood.

“What happened?”

“They found an original Redleaf vendor agreement in an archived compliance file.”

I looked at Eric.

He went pale.

Rebecca continued.

“It carries your signature.”

“I know.”

A pause.

“How?”

“Eric just told me.”

Rebecca became silent.

Then she said, “There is another problem.”

“What?”

“The agreement is dated three weeks after the day Eric claims Redleaf was created.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means somebody may have backfilled the paperwork after money had already begun moving.”

Eric shook his head.

“No.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“That wasn't me.”

Rebecca heard.

“Eric is there?”

“Yes.”

“Put me on speaker.”

I did.

Rebecca asked, “Who prepared the agreement?”

Eric's face had gone gray.

“I don't know.”

“You forged Eleanor's signature but didn't prepare the document?”

“No.”

“Who gave it to you?”

Eric hesitated.

“Thomas.”

Everything inside me stopped.

Rebecca said nothing.

Neither did I.

Eric looked terrified.

“He told me the vendor file needed to look complete.”

I gripped the table.

“When?”

“After he found out.”

The meaning arrived slowly.

Thomas had not merely hidden Eric's theft.

He may have altered company records to conceal it.

Rebecca's voice became very controlled.

“Eric, do not say anything else until your attorney is present.”

But I could not stop.

“My husband gave you a document carrying my forged signature?”

Eric whispered, “Yes.”

“And told you to put it in the file?”

“Yes.”

I looked toward Thomas's empty office.

The man who had spent his final weeks constructing safeguards around my future had also, years earlier, used my name to protect our son.

The trust had been built on Thomas finally admitting what Eric had done.

But now I understood something worse.

Thomas's last confession to me was still incomplete.

And if Eric was telling the truth, the next secret was not about what our son believed he owned.

It was about what my husband had been willing to risk in my name to keep him from losing everything.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Forged Agreement Forced Me
