Daniel checked every exterior door before he followed her out. I watched both cars disappear, then stood alone in the foyer listening to a house that no longer contained my husband.

Thomas's raincoat still hung beside the door.

I touched the sleeve.

For weeks after he became too weak to leave home, I had considered putting it away. Each time, he stopped me.

“I'm not dead yet, Ellie.”

He had smiled when he said it.

Now he was.

I left the coat where it was.

The safe-deposit key remained in my hand as I climbed the stairs.

Box 214.

Six days before Thomas died.

I tried to imagine him going to the bank. Six days before his death, walking from the bedroom to the bathroom exhausted him. Had someone driven him?

Rebecca said she had not.

Mara would have told me.

Eric?

The possibility stopped me halfway upstairs.

No.

If Eric had known about the box, he would have mentioned it—or searched for the key.

At least I thought he would.

That was the problem now.

Every memory had acquired a second version.

I entered our bedroom and replaced the nightstand drawer. The pale rectangle of tape residue remained underneath it, evidence of Thomas's decoy envelope.

I sat on his side of the bed.

The mattress still held the shallow depression where his body had rested during his final months.

For thirty-four years, I had believed I understood how Thomas thought.

Now I wondered whether knowing someone deeply was different from knowing everything they were capable of keeping from you.

My phone buzzed.

Eric.

I let it ring.

A minute later, a message appeared.

I found a lawyer. I won't come back to the house without permission.

I read it twice.

There was no request for forgiveness.

No question about the safe-deposit box because he did not know it existed.

I typed, Thank you.

Then deleted it.

I finally wrote, Understood.

It was the coldest message I had ever sent my son.

I hated that.

I also meant it.

At six the next morning, I was already dressed.

The bank opened at nine.

By seven, I had washed Thomas's coffee mug.

That was harder than the funeral.

I stood at the sink with the mug beneath warm water and watched the faint brown stain disappear from the rim.

Thomas had drunk from it the morning before he died.

He managed only two sips.

I dried it and placed it in the cabinet.

Not thrown away.

Not displayed like a relic.

Just returned to its place.

At eight-thirty, Rebecca arrived.

“You didn't have to come.”

“Yes, I did.”

She wore a navy suit and carried no document case this time.

“Thomas said I had to open the box myself.”

“You will.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To drive.”

I looked toward my car.

It had remained in the garage throughout the funeral.

“I can drive.”

“I know.”

“You and Daniel need to stop saying that.”

A faint smile appeared.

“Probably.”

She waited while I collected my handbag.

The cream envelope from Thomas went inside.

So did the safe-deposit key.

During the drive, neither of us discussed Eric.

Instead, I asked the question that had bothered me all night.

“How did Thomas get to the bank six days before he died?”

Rebecca kept her eyes on the road.

“A car service.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

“You checked?”

“I called the bank this morning.”

I looked at her.

“You've already been working on this.”

“I've been awake since five.”

“So have I.”

“That doesn't surprise me.”

“Did the bank remember him?”

“The branch manager did.”

“What did Thomas do?”

“He rented the box, spent approximately forty minutes in the private viewing room, sealed something inside, and left.”

“Did he bring anything with him?”

“A document envelope and a small case.”

“What kind of case?”

“They don't know.”

I watched buildings pass.

“Did he look sick?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Yes.”

That hurt.

Thomas had used energy he barely possessed to create one last layer of protection.

I wished he had spent those hours with me.

Then I hated myself for wishing it.

We reached the bank shortly after nine.

The branch manager, Susan Keller, met us near the lobby.

I knew Susan socially.

She had attended the funeral.

When she saw me, her professional expression softened.

“Eleanor.”

“Thank you for seeing us.”

“Of course.”

She glanced toward Rebecca.

“I have everything ready.”

Everything.

The word sounded too large for a metal box.

Susan led us through a security door and down a short hallway.

Safe-deposit box 214 was waist-high.

She inserted the bank's key.

I inserted Thomas's.

Both turned.

The drawer slid forward.

Susan lifted a long gray metal box and carried it to a private room.

“I'll leave you alone.”

Rebecca remained outside too.

I looked at her.

“Thomas said you open it.”

“Alone?”

“He was very specific.”

Of course he was.

I entered and closed the door.

The box sat on a plain wooden table.

For several seconds, I only looked at it.

Then I lifted the lid.

Inside were three things.

A thick brown envelope.

A small black flash drive.

And Thomas's wedding ring.

My breath left me.

I reached for the ring first.

Thomas had stopped wearing it during his final week because his fingers became too thin and the ring slipped.

I thought it was in my jewelry box.

Apparently the ring I had placed there was not his original.

I held this one beneath the light.

Inside the band were the words I had engraved thirty-four years earlier.

T + E. Still choosing.

I sat down.

Thomas had joked about that engraving on our wedding day.

“Sounds like we haven't decided yet.”

“That is the point,” I told him. “We have to keep deciding.”

For thirty-four years, we had.

Until death made the choice one-sided.

I slipped the ring onto my thumb.

Then I opened the brown envelope.

The first page was addressed to me.

Ellie,

If you are reading this, then events went badly enough that Rebecca believed you needed the whole truth.

I closed my eyes.

Even dead, Thomas could make a sentence feel like a hand on my shoulder.

I continued.

There are things in this box I should have told you earlier.

Some I kept from you because I wanted to protect Eric.

Some because I was ashamed of my own choices.

One because I needed to know what our son would do when he believed nobody was watching.

Do not make your decision about him until you have seen everything.

My decision.

Not our decision.

Mine.

I turned the page.

Behind it were bank statements.

Old ones.

The dates went back nearly twelve years.

At first, I did not understand their importance.

Then I saw the account title.

Whitmore Holdings Reserve.

I knew that account.

Or thought I did.

It had been established after we purchased the warehouse property.

Thomas handled it because it mostly held proceeds from property leases and occasional equipment sales.

I scanned the transactions.

Several were highlighted.

Checks.

Transfers.

Withdrawals.

The oldest was for nine thousand dollars.

Then twelve.

Then six.

Then eighteen.

The recipient on several transfers was a name I recognized immediately.

Eric Whitmore.

I counted.

Not seven transactions.

Not fourteen months.

Years.

My hands began shaking.

The company theft had not been the beginning.

It had been an escalation.

I read Thomas's next page.

The first time Eric took money, I knew.

I stopped.

My mouth went dry.

I read on.

He was twenty-nine.

He came to me after the fact and said he had used an old transfer authority because he was embarrassed to ask.

He promised it would never happen again.

I made him repay it.

I did not tell you.

The next time, he asked first.

I gave it to him.

After that, the difference between asking and taking began to blur.

I put the paper down.

Twelve years.

Thomas had been quietly rescuing Eric for twelve years.

Sometimes after being asked.

Sometimes after discovering money missing.

Always without telling me.

The anger I felt toward Eric widened until it included my husband.

Not because Thomas had helped our son.

Because he had created a private system in which consequences disappeared before I could see them.

The next paragraph confirmed it.

I believed I was keeping peace in our family.

I see now that I was teaching him that if he crossed a line, I would move the line.

I covered my mouth.

That was Thomas.

Not the version in funeral speeches.

Not the businessman in lobby photographs.

My husband.

Stubborn enough to recognize his mistake only after repeating it for a decade.

I continued through the statements.

The amounts grew.

Nine thousand.

Twelve.

Twenty.

Thirty-five.

Repayments appeared sometimes.

Other times Thomas simply moved money from another account to cover the difference.

I had approved some of those balancing transfers without knowing why they were necessary.

My signature appeared on two.

I stared at it.

Thomas had never forged anything.

He had simply given me incomplete information and let me sign.

That distinction offered little comfort.

Near the bottom of the envelope lay a printed ledger prepared by the forensic accountant.

Total financial support, unauthorized transfers and unrepaid advances associated with Eric over twelve years:

$642,400.

I read the number again.

Six hundred forty-two thousand four hundred dollars.

Not all stolen.

The ledger separated categories.

Authorized gifts.

Loans.

Unrepaid loans.

Unauthorized withdrawals.

Company losses linked to Eric's decisions.

Thomas had documented everything.

At the bottom was another number.

$247,800.

Estimated unrecovered amount.

I pushed away from the table.

My chair struck the wall.

For years, Thomas had told me our retirement reserves were lower than expected because expansion had been expensive.

Expansion had been expensive.

But not that expensive.

Part of the difference had been our son.

I walked once around the tiny room.

Then returned.

The flash drive remained.

A note was taped to it.

WATCH ALONE.

I almost refused.

I did not want another secret.

I wanted Thomas alive so I could be furious at him properly.

I wanted to stand beside his hospital bed and demand why he had decided I could not survive the truth.

Instead, I inserted the drive into the small laptop Rebecca had told me to bring.

One video file appeared.

THOMAS_ELEANOR_FINAL.

I clicked.

Thomas appeared on the screen.

My breath stopped.

He sat in our study.

The date stamp showed eight days before his death.

He wore the gray cardigan I had bought him the previous Christmas.

His face was thin.

His eyes were tired.

But when he looked toward the camera, he looked like himself.

“Ellie.”

I pressed both hands against my mouth.

He paused in the recording as though he knew I would need time.

“If you're watching this, I'm sorry.”

Tears blurred the screen.

“I should have told you sooner about Eric. Rebecca told me that. Mara would tell me that if she knew. You would definitely tell me that.”

A weak smile.

I laughed through tears.

Then his face became serious.

“I kept believing one more rescue would be the last one.”

He looked down.

“I thought if I could get him stable, he'd become the man we raised him to be.”

My chest hurt.

“But I finally understood something. We did raise that man. He's still in there. We also taught him that being our son meant the floor would always rise before he hit it.”

Thomas coughed.

The recording continued after a short cut.

“I don't want the trust to punish him.”

His voice was weaker.

“I want it to stop us from helping him destroy himself.”

I wiped my face.

Then Thomas said something I did not expect.

“And Ellie, if he fails the test, don't protect my memory.”

I stared.

“Tell him what I did. Tell him I hid things from you. Tell him I made excuses. He needs to know this isn't a story where he was bad and we were wise.”

Thomas leaned closer to the camera.

“I helped create this.”

My tears fell harder.

“And if you're angry with me, be angry.”

A faint smile.

“You've earned it.”

The video ended with Thomas looking away from the camera.

Then he looked back.

“One more thing.”

I waited.

“The ledger isn't why I rented this box.”

My pulse changed.

“There is another document beneath it.”

I looked into the metal box.

Under the ledger was a thin blue folder I had not noticed.

Thomas continued.

“That document is the reason Eric believes the house should eventually be his.”

I reached for the folder.

“And he isn't completely wrong.”

My hand froze.

Thomas's final words came softly.

“But he doesn't know who actually owns it.”

The screen went black.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Thomas’s Last Recording Revealed the House Eric Claimed Was Neither His Nor Mine in the Simple Way Either of Us Believed

I slept for less than three hours.
