vaguely.

After Thomas's minor surgery six years earlier, he had given Eric access to a small checking account in case I needed help paying bills while Thomas recovered.

The access was supposed to be temporary.

I assumed it had ended.

Apparently so had Thomas.

“Was your name still on the account?”

“As an authorized flinched.

The word had landed exactly where I intended.

Again.

“So after stealing from the company, after selling your condo, after your father lent you money to repair what you had done, you took more.”

“It wasn't like that.”

“What was it like?”

“I thought it was mine twenty-eighth.

Eric had visited for less than twenty minutes.

He arrived carrying coffee I never drank.

He stood near the bed.

He kissed Thomas's intended to hit him.

The thought did not even enter my mind.

I simply could not sit near him.

I crossed to the kitchen sink and gripped the counter.

Rain tapped against the window above it.

Outside, Thomas's tomato plants had collapsed against their stakes, unpicked fruit splitting on the vines.

Behind me, Eric said, “Mom.”

“Don't.”

“I thought Dad wasn't going to make it through the night.”

I turned.

That was somehow worse.

“What?”

“The doctor said he was bad.”

“So you decided to take the money before he died?”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you just said.”

“I thought I would need it for expenses.”

“What expenses?”

“Everything afterward.”

“What understood.

“Gone.”

He looked down.

“Most of it.”

I laughed once.

The sound frightened even me.

“Of course.”

Rebecca said, “Eleanor, sit down.”

“No.”

She did not repeat herself.

“What did you spend it on?” I asked.

Eric rubbed his forehead.

“Debt.”

“What debt this time?”

“Tax debt.”

“Yours?”

“Yes.”

“How clients.

Thomas and I had assumed he was supporting himself because he stopped asking us for regular money.

I now understood he had simply become more creative about how he obtained it.

Rebecca opened her case again.

“Thomas's personal account statements were part of the estate review.”

I turned toward her.

“You already knew about the transfer?”

“Not until yesterday.”

“Yesterday?”

“I received the final statement electronically.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I planned to discuss it after the funeral.”

Everyone had planned to tell me things after the funeral.

Thomas's secrets.

Eric's theft.

The trust.

The missing money.

I wondered whether people imagined grief created spare capacity for betrayal.

“Did you tell Thomas?”

“No. He was already gone when the statement arrived.”

That mattered.

I did not know why.

Perhaps because it meant Thomas died without discovering this final act.

Perhaps that was mercy.

Perhaps not.

Eric said, “He would have understood.”

I turned so fast that he stopped.

“Do not tell me what he would have understood.”

“You know Dad.”

“Yes.”

“So do I.”

“Then read his letter again.”

His face reddened.

“That was about the company.”

“It was about you taking what you thought would become yours later.”

“This was different.”

“How?”

“Because I was still authorized on the account.”

Legal access.

Moral permission.

Again, Eric had mistaken one for the other.

Rebecca said, “Authority to sign does not necessarily equal beneficial ownership.”

“I know that.”

“Do you?”

He looked at her angrily.

I returned to the table and picked up Thomas's letter.

“Your father wrote this because he knew you had not learned the difference.”

“That is not fair.”

“Stop saying that.”

My voice rose for the first time.

“Stop using fairness as though it means getting what you expected.”

He fell silent.

I lowered my voice.

“Your father was dying.”

“I know.”

“No. You keep saying that as though his dying made everything available.”

Eric stared at me.

The words had found something.

I continued carefully.

“When Thomas bed.”

“I was scared.”

“And today you took my keys because you wanted an envelope you believed could improve your claim.”

He said nothing.

“Do you see the pattern?”

His eyes filled.

“I was trying not to lose everything.”

For the first time since the funeral, the sentence sounded like the truth beneath all the others.

Not greed alone.

Fear.

Perhaps long-standing, humiliating fear.

Of debt.

Of failure.

Of Thomas dying before repairing Eric's life one more time.

Of me learning who he had become.

“What did you think you were losing?” I asked.

“Dad.”

My anger paused.

Eric looked toward the empty chair.

“And after Dad, everything else.”

His voice broke.

I waited.

“I knew he didn't trust me anymore.”

The confession came quietly.

“I knew it.”

He wiped his face quickly.

“He stopped asking my opinion. Stopped talking about me coming back to the company.
