You decided to take my key, take my phone, leave me on a road, enter my house and search my bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou make it sound\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am describing what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His grip loosened.<\/p>\n<p>He slid the pages across the table.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s handwriting hurt to see.<\/p>\n<p>Eric,<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, then I was right about one thing I hoped to be wrong about.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>My throat closed.<\/p>\n<p>I tried again.<\/p>\n<p>You moved before the dust settled.<\/p>\n<p>You reached for control instead of asking what was yours, what was your mother&#39;s, and what still needed to be decided properly.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the table.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>I know about the money.<\/p>\n<p>I knew almost from the beginning, though it took me longer than it should have to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>I also know why you took it.<\/p>\n<p>Debt can explain fear. It does not excuse dishonesty.<\/p>\n<p>When I confronted you, you promised repayment and secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>You repaid most of it.<\/p>\n<p>I kept the secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>That may have been my paragraph was harder.<\/p>\n<p>Your mother did not know because I could not bear to put that pain in her face while I was trying to keep the company stable.<\/p>\n<p>I told myself I was protecting her.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is I was also protecting you.<\/p>\n<p>I was afraid if Eleanor knew, she would finally stop making excuses for you.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Eric&#39;s face had reddened.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThat&#39;s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I whispered, \u201cIt is exactly fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>The trust is not a punishment.<\/p>\n<p>It exists because money, authority and ownership are responsibilities before they are rewards.<\/p>\n<p>If you want control one day, control will not.<\/p>\n<p>I read the final lines twice.<\/p>\n<p>Do not blame your mother for this.<\/p>\n<p>She did not design it.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, she argued for you longer than she knew.<\/p>\n<p>I love you.<\/p>\n<p>Love is why I am leaving you a road forward instead of pretending the road behind you never happened.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>The signature wavered.<\/p>\n<p>My tears finally fell.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatic sobbing.<\/p>\n<p>Just two tears landing on the page.<\/p>\n<p>I wiped them quickly before they damaged the ink.<\/p>\n<p>Eric said, \u201cHe made me sound demanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad lied to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I repeated. \u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>I was not going to turn Thomas into a saint because he was dead.<\/p>\n<p>He had made a choice without me.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps from love.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps rights can be considered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I don&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou remain a beneficiary subject to the existing limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mom controls everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cStop saying it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike I am stealing something from you by continuing to own and manage things I helped build.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not spend thirty-four years working so that the moment your father died, you could stand in my house and ask when I intend to get out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He heard the meaning this time.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because Thomas&#39;s letter had stripped away the story he had told himself.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca closed the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another requirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFull accounting disclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already told Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas knew what the forensic review found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust requires you to certify there were no other unauthorized transfers or hidden liabilities connected to the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric became very still.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cEric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe declaration is not optional if you ever seek expanded control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will be signing under penalty of
