didn't have to.”

“Yes,” I said. “He did.”

Eric pushed away from the doorway.

“I knew you wouldn't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“You and Dad built everything for me.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

He stopped.

“We built a life.”

“For the family.”

“Yes.”

“And I'm your family.”

“Yes.”

“So what is the difference?”

The question was so sincere that for one terrible moment I understood the entire problem.

Eric did not think he was stealing.

He thought he was collecting.

All the things Thomas and I had sacrificed to create had been translated, in his mind, into evidence of a future entitlement.

Tuition.

Jobs.

Loans.

Second chances.

A room always available.

Money offered before he asked.

We called those things love.

He had slowly begun calling them precedent.

“The difference,” I said, “is that loving you does not mean everything I own already belongs to you.”

His face hardened again.

“That's not what Dad thought.”

“Then the missing envelope may tell us.”

Eric looked at the empty nightstand.

For the first time, we wanted the same thing.

The truth.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Is Eric there?”

“Yes.”

“Put me on speaker.”

I did.

Rebecca did not waste time.

“I found the envelope.”

Eric straightened.

“Where?”

“In my office safe.”

I gripped the phone.

“How did it get there?”

“Thomas gave it to me the day after he prepared the one Eleanor carried.”

Eric said, “That was supposed to be in the house.”

“No,” Rebecca replied. “Thomas wanted you to believe it was in the house.”

The room went silent.

I stared at the tacky tape beneath the drawer.

A decoy.

Thomas had created a hiding place and allowed Eric to see it.

Not accidentally.

Intentionally.

“Why?” I whispered.

Rebecca's answer came slowly.

“Because he needed to know whether Eric would go looking for it before asking you what he was entitled to.”

Eric stepped backward.

“That is insane.”

“No,” Rebecca said. “It was a test.”

“A test for what?”

There was a pause.

Then Rebecca said, “For whether the inheritance Thomas planned to give you should ever pass into your control.”
