stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The word surprised both of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t need them. You wanted them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you brought those old authorization papers before you ever entered the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Not denial.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you had them, Eric?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#39;t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad gave them to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore he revoked them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse slowed.<\/p>\n<p>I had finally reached the question he did not want to answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew they were revoked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou worked under that authority. You knew when it ended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad told me things would change later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, can we talk about this at home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Home.<\/p>\n<p>The word sounded different now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I&#39;m tired of lawyers and employees listening to family business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat family business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Always the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to get some things tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will not enter without me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re Dad&#39;s things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocuments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, fear\u2014not anger\u2014entered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another envelope in Dad&#39;s bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw it a few weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the nightstand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn&#39;t read all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had my name on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the cream envelope in my lap.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had left one for me.<\/p>\n<p>One for Mara.<\/p>\n<p>One for Eric at the company.<\/p>\n<p>And apparently another envelope had been kept beside his bed.<\/p>\n<p>Eric knew about it.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, he wanted it badly enough to take my house key on the day of the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not believe him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>But suddenly I knew exactly why Thomas had insisted that Rebecca keep a spare house key.<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrive faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another envelope in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know what&#39;s in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my fingers around Thomas&#39;s final note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think my son does.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28575\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: By the Time I Reached Willow Lane, Someone Had Already Entered the Bedroom Thomas Had Tried So Carefully to Protect<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca called the gas station before I could call her.
