The ordinary sounds made what Eric had done feel even stranger. There should have been witnesses. There should have been someone to say, You cannot leave your mother beside a road after your father's funeral.

Instead there was only me, the envelope, and the fading sound of his engine.

I carried it toward the station.

Each step felt wrong in my funeral shoes. Gravel slipped beneath the soles, and by the time I reached the concrete walkway, the hem of my dress had picked up small brown spots from the wet shoulder.

A bell chimed when I pushed through the glass door.

The man behind the counter looked up from a newspaper.

He was perhaps sixty, with silver hair at his temples and a plaid shirt stretched across his stomach.

“You all right, ma'am?”

My first instinct was to say yes.

I had been saying yes for months.

Yes, I was managing Thomas's medication.

Yes, I was sleeping.

Yes, Eric was coping.

Yes, the company would be all right.

Yes, we had everything under control.

The word rose automatically and stopped behind my teeth.

“No,” I said.

The man's newspaper lowered.

“My son left me outside.”

He glanced toward the windows.

“He coming back?”

“He says he is.”

Even to me, it sounded absurdly hopeful.

The man pushed a small wooden chair toward the end of the counter.

“You can sit there.”

“Thank you.”

I sat.

My hands shook when I placed the envelope on the counter.

It was heavier than ordinary correspondence.

The flap had been sealed with tape, not merely adhesive.

Rebecca had prepared it herself.

Three weeks earlier, after her private meeting with Thomas, she had come downstairs carrying two envelopes. One went into her briefcase. The other she gave to Thomas.

He had kept it in the drawer beside his bed.

On the morning of the funeral, while I was fastening the pearl earrings he had given me for our thirtieth anniversary, I found it lying on top of my handbag.

I remembered picking it up.

“Why is this here?”

Thomas was gone by then.

There was no one to answer.

Rebecca called before the service and told me simply, “Take it with you. Thomas wanted you to have it today.”

I had assumed it contained instructions for after the funeral.

Perhaps account numbers.

Perhaps a personal letter.

I had been too numb to open it.

Now the instruction on the front made my skin cold.

OPEN ONLY IF ERIC TRIES TO TAKE CONTROL.

Not if there is a disagreement.

Not if Eric becomes upset.

Not if questions arise.

If Eric tries to take control.

Thomas had anticipated this.

That realization hurt differently from Eric's betrayal.

Thomas had seen something I had refused to see.

I slid one finger under the taped flap.

Then stopped.

The man behind the counter pretended to be reading again, giving me the privacy of someone who understood that looking away could be kindness.

I tore the envelope open.

Inside were four folded pages and a smaller sealed note.

The smaller envelope bore Thomas's handwriting.

Ellie.

Only Thomas called me that.

I touched the letters before opening it.

The paper inside had been written in stages. I could tell from the pressure of the pen. The first lines were steady. The last sloped downward.

Ellie,

If you are reading this because Eric is grieving, be patient with him.

If you are reading it because he is trying to claim what he has not yet earned, do not give him anything simply to keep peace.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I pressed my fingertips against my eyelids until the burning passed.

The note continued.

You have spent most of our marriage making difficult things look easy. Eric learned the wrong lesson from that. He thinks the company appeared because I worked hard. He does not understand how many times your work kept mine from failing.

That was partly my fault.

I read the sentence twice.

A laugh escaped me, small and broken.

Even dying, Thomas could apologize with the efficiency of a man correcting an invoice.

I continued.

There are arrangements Rebecca will explain. Trust her.

Do not let Eric rush you.

Do not sign anything he brings you.

Do not surrender the house keys because he says I promised him the house.

I lowered the page.

The station seemed to tilt.

Thomas knew.

He had specifically anticipated the keys.

I looked toward the road as if Eric might suddenly reappear and explain how my dead husband had predicted a conversation that had happened almost word for word.

The clerk set a paper cup of water beside me.

“No charge,” he said.

“Thank you.”

I drank.

Then I unfolded the first of the larger pages.

It was not a will.

At the top was Rebecca's letterhead and a short summary of emergency instructions.

If Eric attempted to enter the company asserting ownership, I was to call Mara Benton, our office manager.

If he attempted to remove records, access accounts, change locks, direct employees or represent himself as controlling owner, Mara had been instructed not to comply without confirmation from Rebecca.

Another paragraph concerned the house.

I read it too quickly.

Then again, slower.

The property at 18 Willow Lane was protected from unilateral transfer.

Protected.

The legal language became denser after that.

I understood enough to know Thomas had done something formal.

Something Eric did not know about.

My heartbeat steadied.

Not because I understood everything.

Because I finally had an instruction.

Call Mara.

I reached automatically for my phone.

My hand closed on nothing.

Eric had taken it.

“Sir?”

The clerk looked up.

“Could I use your telephone?”

He pointed toward an old cordless handset near the register.

“Local call?”

“Yes.”

“Go ahead.”

I knew Mara's number from memory.

For eighteen years, she had been the person we called when a driver broke down, a client threatened to leave or Thomas forgot where he had put a contract.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Hello?”

“Mara.”

A pause.

Then, “Eleanor?”

The relief in her voice frightened me.

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“At a gas station.”

“What?”

“Eric left me here.”

There was silence.

“What do you mean, left you?”

“He took my phone and my house keys.
