Tax claims. Eminent-domain pressure."

"Anything faster?"

Victor hesitated.

"Physical access."

"What does that mean?"

"Port Meridian contains an old bonded warehouse."

"And?"

"Harbor Seven stored original transaction ledgers there."

I stared.

"More evidence."

"Possibly."

"Does Peter know?"

"Arthur knew."

Then Peter knew or would soon.

Thomas's letter had one final paragraph.

Michael believes the warehouse contains enough to prove how Arthur funded Meridian's earliest acquisitions.

If those ledgers survive, they will show something none of us can admit publicly without destroying ourselves.

Richard looked at me.

"What?"

He read.

Arthur did not supply the original capital.

Michael did.

Silence.

I felt something drop inside me.

Dad.

Again.

Not merely employee.

Not merely minority partner.

Original capital.

Victor looked stunned.

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"Michael didn't have that kind of money."

"Then where did it come from?"

No one answered.

Thomas had.

Last sentence.

Ask Marianne where Michael got the first three million spoke.

"My mother wrote about money."

We turned.

"Rebecca?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Her files."

"The missing ones?"

Claire shook her head.

"I have some."

Of course she did.

She opened an encrypted drive.

Search.

Michael.

Three million.

One result.

A scanned letter from Mom to Rebecca.

Dated twenty-seven years earlier.

Marianne wrote:

Michael says the money is clean.

I don't believe him.

Rebecca replied:

Then ask where a twenty-eight-year-old analyst found three million dollars.

Mom:

I did.

He says it came from his father.

My grandfather.

I frowned.

Dad's father had been poor.

Victor knew that too.

"Impossible."

Claire continued.

Rebecca:

Michael's father never had three million dollars.

Mom:

I know.

Then a final message from Mom.

I found the transfer.

It came from Sterling.

James stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"No."

I looked at him.

"What?"

James's face had gone white.

"That can't be right."

"Why?"

"Because twenty-seven years ago I didn't control Sterling."

"Who did?"

"My father."

Daniel's grandfather.

Another generation.

Another connection.

"Why would your father give Dad three million dollars?"

James didn't answer.

Victor did.

"Because Michael wasn't originally working for Arthur."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Victor stared at the old dates as if seeing the architecture for the first time.

"Michael was sent to Arthur."

Silence.

"By Sterling?"

Victor nodded slowly.

"To investigate him."

My pulse increased.

That reversed Dad's history again.

Not absolution.

He had still participated.

Still profited.

Still crossed lines.

But maybe he hadn't entered Meridian for money.

Not initially.

"Did Dad become corrupted after going inside?"

Richard asked.

Victor whispered, "Maybe."

James sat again.

"My father never told me."

Claire said, "Someone did."

She opened Rebecca's next file.

A memorandum.

Sterling Strategic Protection Program.

Subject:

MICHAEL BENNETT — EMBEDDED ASSET.

I stared at Dad's name.

Embedded asset.

Twenty-seven years earlier.

Dad had entered Arthur Vale's company under instructions from Daniel's grandfather.

Then stayed.

Helped build Meridian.

Took money.

Crossed lines.

Eventually rebelled.

The story wasn't that Dad had once been good or bad.

It was that he entered a corrupt system believing he could control his own compromise.

Then became part of it.

And spent the rest of his life trying to get back out.

Daniel joined by secure video.

When we showed him the memorandum, he stared silently.

"My grandfather recruited Michael."

"Looks that way."

"Why?"

"Arthur was targeting Sterling even then."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"So this started before any of us."

"Yes."

"Then Port Meridian—"

"Was probably part of the counterstrategy from the beginning."

Alvarez's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression hardened.

"What time?"

She listened.

"Who authorized it?"

Another pause.

Then:

"Stop everything until federal teams arrive."

She hung up.

"What?"

"Port Meridian."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

"Someone entered the property twenty minutes ago."

"Peter?"

"Unknown."

"Warehouse?"

"Alarm triggered."

Victor stood.

"The ledgers."

Alvarez nodded.

"Fire department received an automatic hazardous-material alert."

Not fire.

Hazardous material.

"Could Peter be destroying records chemically?"

Victor's face went pale.

"Not records."

"What?"

"The warehouse sits over an old fuel-transfer system."

James whispered, "No."

I looked between them.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Victor answered.

"If that system is breached, the site becomes an environmental disaster."

My stomach tightened.

"And Harbor Seven?"

"Could lose control of the property through emergency seizure."

There it was.

Peter didn't need five votes if he could make the asset legally untouchable.

Daniel said, "He'll destroy the land rather than lose it."

"No."

I looked at Dad's notes.

Peter's pattern.

Mirrors.

Two outcomes.

Both useful.

"He doesn't want to destroy it."

Alvarez frowned.

"Then why trigger a hazardous-material alarm?"

"Because he wants authorities to seize it."

Richard understood.

"Then buy it back through another entity."

Exactly.

Distress the asset.

Force intervention.

Acquire control later.

Arthur's original strategy.

Peter returning to the oldest play in the system.

Alvarez was already moving.

Federal environmental teams.

Fire department.

Port authority.

Police.

I grabbed my coat.

She pointed at me.

"No."

"Not arguing."

"Good."

"I'm going with Victor."

"That's arguing."

Victor looked at me.

"Why me?"

"Because you know the site."

"So does James."

I looked at James.

"Do you?"

He hesitated.

Victor didn't.

That decided it.

Alvarez swore.

"Both of you stay behind the federal perimeter."

"Fine."

Richard laughed.

She glared at him.

"What?"

"She means it for at least six minutes."

Claire folded Thomas's letter and handed it to me.

"Take this."

"Why?"

"My father spent eleven years trying to deliver it."

I put it inside my coat.

At Port Meridian, emergency lights painted the old warehouses in rotating flashes.

Fire crews waited outside one section.

Federal agents moved through the gate.

No visible smoke.

No explosion.

Yet.

Victor pointed toward a long brick warehouse.

"That's it."

Then we saw someone emerge from the side door.

Hands raised.

Agents surrounded him.

Not Peter.

Not Sloane.

Not Martin.

Samuel Price.

I stared.

Samuel looked toward us across the floodlit yard.

Even from a distance, I could see how weak he was.

Alvarez approached him first.

Then turned toward us.

Her expression was impossible to read.

"What?"

She walked closer.

"Samuel says he triggered the alarm."

"Why?"

"To bring federal authorities onto the property before Peter's people arrived."

Relief mixed with anger.

"Where are Peter's people?"

Samuel answered himself.

"Already inside."

My pulse jumped.

"How many?"

"Three."

"Doing what?"

"Looking for the ledgers."

Victor asked, "Did they find them?"

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because Michael moved them."

I stared.

"Where?"

Samuel looked directly at me.

"That's what Peter never understood."

"What?"

"The warehouse was another mirror."

Of course.

"The ledgers were never here."

"Not the originals."

"Then where are they?"

Samuel smiled faintly.

"Michael put them somewhere Arthur would never search."

My frustration rose.

"Where?"

Samuel looked toward the city.

"Inside Sterling."

Daniel's voice came through my phone.

"What does that mean?"

Samuel heard him.

"It means your grandfather helped Michael hide the original Meridian ledgers in the one place Arthur believed he was already controlling."

"Where in Sterling?"

Samuel's smile disappeared.

"The foundation archive."

James went still.

Daniel said, "We don't have a foundation archive."

James looked at the ground.

Yes, you do, his face said.

I turned.

"James."

He exhaled.

"It's beneath the old Sterling building."

"Does Peter know?"

"No."

"Who does?"

James looked at me.

"Until tonight?"

He paused.

"Only not been counting the wrong votes because he misunderstood Harbor Seven.

He had been forcing us to reveal where the real evidence was.

Every discovery.

Every challenge.

Every defensive move.

We had been narrowing the map for him.

And the moment James admitted the original Meridian ledgers were hidden inside Sterling, the building
