12 – Brenda Took Me to the Place Where Richard Was Being Hidden, but She Had One Condition Before Letting Me See Him

I did not tell Daniel where I was going.

I told Alvarez.

That distinction mattered.

Brenda gave me an address in South San Francisco near an industrial strip of warehouses, repair shops, and loading yards.

No company name.

No suite number.

Just an address and instructions to park behind the building.

Alvarez said absolutely not.

I went anyway.

Not alone.

She followed at a distance with two plainclothes officers and strict instructions that I was not to enter anywhere they couldn't reach quickly.

I agreed.

Neither of us believed I would obey perfectly.

The building had once been a printing facility.

Half the windows were painted over.

A faded FOR LEASE sign hung on the front fence.

Brenda waited near a side door wearing jeans, flat shoes, and a dark coat.

I had never seen her outside corporate clothing.

Without the tailored jackets and controlled expression, she looked older.

And frightened.

She opened the door.

"You're alone?"

"Yes."

The lie came easily now.

Her eyes moved toward the street.

"No Sterling people?"

"No."

"Marcus?"

"No."

"Police?"

I held her gaze.

"If you're about to tell me where my missing brother is, assume I took precautions."

She almost smiled.

"Fair."

"Where is he?"

"Inside."

Every muscle in my body tightened.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

I moved toward the door.

Brenda blocked me.

"Not yet."

"Move."

"Chloe."

"Move."

She didn't.

"I need you to hear something first."

My hands curled.

"If you've done anything to him—"

"I kept him alive."

That stopped me.

"For whom?"

"For himself."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

Brenda looked toward the parking lot.

"Victor thinks Richard is dead."

My pulse jumped.

"Why?"

"Because I told him."

I stared.

"You told Victor Lang my brother was dead?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Coleman ordered him killed."

The words landed without drama.

Maybe because I had expected them.

Maybe because after everything else, murder had become only another tool these people used.

"Who was supposed to do it?"

"Sloane."

"The dead security contractor."

"He's not dead."

"We know."

Brenda nodded.

"I arranged that record."

I stared.

"You faked his death?"

"His public death."

"Why?"

"Victor needed someone who could operate without normal scrutiny."

"And you helped."

"Yes."

No excuse.

That made two guilty people admitting things without trying to cleanse themselves.

Marcus.

Now Brenda.

"Why help Richard?"

Her expression changed.

"Because Michael asked me to protect his children."

My breath caught.

"Eleven years ago?"

"Yes."

I stepped back.

"You knew Dad."

"Yes."

"You recorded Victor."

"Yes."

"Then why did you help destroy my family?"

Pain crossed her face.

"Because I failed."

I almost laughed.

Everyone's favorite confession.

"I warned Michael that Victor knew about the investigation."

"Too late."

"Yes."

"I recorded Lang threatening him."

"Yes."

"And after Dad died?"

"I panicked."

"Thomas panicked. James Sterling panicked. You panicked. Apparently everyone panicked except the people committing crimes."

She accepted that.

"I gave Michael the original recording."

"The first tape?"

"Part of it."

"What was on the second?"

Her eyes moved toward the building.

"We'll get there."

"No. Now."

She took a breath.

"The second recording captures Victor discussing what would happen after Michael was removed."

Removed.

My stomach twisted.

"Meaning after he died."

"Yes."

"Did Victor order his death?"

Brenda's face tightened.

"He never uses direct language."

"That's not what I asked."

"The recording strongly suggests he expected Michael not to survive the week."

I felt suddenly cold.

"Who was with him?"

"Richard Coleman."

Our CEO.

"Anyone else?"

"Samuel Price."

The security contractor.

The man assigned to my father's home.

There it was.

Not absolute proof.

But the chain was closing.

"Where is Price?"

"I don't know."

"Alive?"

"Last I knew."

"When?"

"Four years ago."

"Was he still working for Lang?"

"Indirectly."

"What about Thomas?"

Brenda looked away.

"I didn't kill Thomas."

"I didn't ask that."

"You were going to."

"Did you speak to him the night before he died?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"He wanted to give me the ledger."

"Why you?"

"Because he knew I had been helping Richard."

"So you and Richard were working together."

"For years."

I thought of Richard's warning.

Don't trust Brenda.

"Then why did he warn me about you?"

She gave a sad smile.

"Because Richard understood me."

"Meaning?"

"I've betrayed people before."

At least she knew herself.

"Did you betray him?"

"Once."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

"What happened?"

"I gave Coleman information about Northbridge."

My anger sharpened.

"Why?"

"Victor had threatened my daughter."

That stopped me.

"You have a daughter?"

"Yes."

I'd worked with Brenda for years.

I had known almost nothing about her personal life.

"She doesn't use my last name."

Of course.

"Victor found her anyway."

"What did he threaten?"

"Her career first."

Brenda's mouth tightened.

"Then her husband."

Same structure.

Always.

Find leverage.

Widen the fracture.

Force the useful person to choose.

"I gave Coleman enough to protect her."

"And hurt Richard."

"Yes."

"So why should I trust you now?"

"You shouldn't."

That answer surprised me.

"Then why am I here?"

"Because Richard asked for you."

My anger disappeared under something sharper.

"When?"

"This morning."

"He's awake?"

"Yes."

"Injured?"

"Yes."

"How badly?"

"Not fatally."

I moved toward the door again.

Brenda blocked me once more.

"One condition."

"No."

"Then you can't see him."

I stared.

"You don't get conditions."

"This one matters."

"Try me."

She reached into her coat and removed a small digital recorder.

"Richard wants you to hear something first."

"The tape?"

"A copy."

I looked at it.

"Michael's?"

"The second recording."

My pulse increased.

"Thomas had it."

"Yes."

"Police found a recorder in his car."

"A decoy."

That made sense immediately.

"Where did you get the real one?"

"Thomas gave it to me before he died."

"So you saw him."

"Yes."

"When?"

"Yesterday morning."

"Where?"

"Here."

I looked at the building.

Thomas had been here.

Richard too.

"What happened after he left?"

"He went to meet someone."

"Who?"

"He wouldn't tell me."

"And ended up dead."

Brenda nodded.

"Yes."

I took the recorder.

"Why listen before seeing Richard?"

"Because once you see him, you won't think clearly."

I hated the assumption.

Mostly because she might be right.

"What will I hear?"

"Your father."

I stared.

"And Victor."

"Yes."

"Coleman?"

"Yes."

"Price?"

"Yes."

"Anyone else?"

Brenda hesitated.

There it was.

"Who?"

She looked directly at me.

"Richard."

My chest tightened.

"My brother?"

"Yes."

"How old was he?"

"Twenty-six."

"What was he doing there?"

"Trying to save Michael."

I stared at the recorder.

"Play it."

Brenda led me into a small office just inside the building.

No windows.

One metal desk.

Two chairs.

I sat.

She closed the door but did not lock it.

Good.

Then she pressed play.

Static.

A scrape.

Voices.

Victor Lang first.

You don't understand the position you've created.

My father's voice answered.

I understand exactly.

I had forgotten how he sounded.

The recording hit me physically.

Dad.

Alive.

Angry.

Controlled.

Victor said:

Your son has already involved himself.

Dad answered:

Richard did what I asked.

Then a younger voice.

Richard.

I'm right here. You can talk to me.

My eyes filled instantly.

Brenda stood near the wall, silent.

Coleman's voice came next.

Michael, nobody wants this to become uglier.

Dad laughed.

It already is.

Another voice.

Samuel Price, perhaps.

Say the word and we're done.

The audio shifted.

Then Dad:

If anything happens to me, everything goes out.

Victor:

No, it doesn't.

Dad:

You sure?

Victor:

Thomas won't move. James Sterling won't move. Brenda is already frightened.

I looked at her.

She closed her eyes.

Then Victor continued.

And Richard is young enough to understand consequences.

My brother's voice:

Try me.

Dad snapped:

Richard, enough.

The recording jumped.

Then something I had not expected.

Victor mentioned me.

Chloe is staying out of this.

Dad's voice sharpened.

You don't say her name.

Victor laughed softly.

Why? She's the sensible one.

My skin crawled.

She's already where she needs to be.

I leaned forward.

Eleven years ago.

Before I joined Coleman's company.

Dad asked:

What does that mean?

Victor answered:

It means people become useful long before they understand why.

I stopped breathing.

Brenda paused the recording.

"No."

"There's more."

"Play it."

She did.

Coleman spoke.

The consulting firm she's at works three of our accounts. If she stays there, fine.

My heart slammed.

They had been watching my career.

Even then.

Victor:

If she moves, we make sure she moves somewhere manageable.

Dad:

Stay away from her.

Victor:

Then cooperate.

There it was.

My career had been leverage against my father before I even knew these people were paying attention.

The tape continued.

Dad:

And if I don't?

A long silence.

Then Samuel Price:

You have a heart condition, Michael?

Dad:

No.

Price:

Everybody has something.

My throat tightened.

Victor said quietly:

That's enough.

But not angry.

Not surprised.

As if Price had simply spoken too plainly.

Then Richard.

You touch him and I go public.

Victor:

With what?

Richard:

Everything.

Victor laughed.

Everything is a word people use when they have almost nothing.

Dad interrupted.

Richard, leave.

No.

Now.

Then movement.

A door.

But Richard's voice remained faintly audible.

He hadn't left completely.

Victor continued.

I am offering you the last clean exit.

Dad:

There was never a clean exit.

Victor:

Walk away. Send Richard away. Keep Chloe where she is. Your wife keeps her home. Everyone survives the inconvenience.

My hands went cold.

Everyone survives.

Dad answered:

And you keep stealing companies.

Victor:

You keep calling it stealing because you need a moral category.
