still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf those letters were in Dad\u2019s archive, he knew Thomas had intentionally discounted the sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, his confidence broke.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel said quietly, \u201cWalter may also have known you discovered them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow else would he have copies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s handwriting filled the first made this choice.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had not told him.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have ended your anger in one sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>A note from Dad answered.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas,<\/p>\n<p>I will not use your private medical thought he paid because he knew he was guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent thirty years hating him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt compassion.<\/p>\n<p>And irritation.<\/p>\n<p>Both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou also broke into Helen\u2019s business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to deal with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou also returned the files with a note telling me to decide which secrets deserved burial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Walter had hidden wrongdoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found a private truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd decided I should expose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked down.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly understood what Dad\u2019s archive had become.<\/p>\n<p>Not evidence of one man\u2019s secret life.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence of boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Some secrets protected wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>Others protected privacy.<\/p>\n<p>The hard part was learning the difference.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Helen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not automatically yours to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Mom\u2019s voice in my head.<\/p>\n<p>Wanting to know doesn\u2019t make it yours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas chose not to tell her how sick he was at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserves to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou disagree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the person who was owed that truth died before we could ask her what she wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>Helen was alive.<\/p>\n<p>I corrected myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry. Thomas died. Helen is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard waited.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell her what affects her now. You can tell her what you did. But don\u2019t turn Thomas\u2019s private letters into punishment for a dead man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, uncertainty did not frighten me.<\/p>\n<p>We could ask Helen.<\/p>\n<p>That was the simplest answer.<\/p>\n<p>Not decide for her.<\/p>\n<p>Ask whether she wanted to know.<\/p>\n<p>We did.<\/p>\n<p>Helen came to Samuel\u2019s office the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Richard told her he had found information about Thomas\u2019s health and the company sale.<\/p>\n<p>He did not give details.<\/p>\n<p>He asked whether she wanted to read the letters.<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked at him for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whatever Thomas hid, he hid thirty years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it affected you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>Helen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew my husband was scared. I knew he was sicker than he admitted. I knew Walter helped us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She touched the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe Thomas should have told me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not here to argue with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou broke into my building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou owe me for the glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the alarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Rafael\u2019s toolbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t take\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour man did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard closed his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Helen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Start there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s private medical history remained sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<p>Not mine.<\/p>\n<p>Not Richard\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>As we left, Samuel said, \u201cYou handled that well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to stop deciding what other adults need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter would\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening, I told Mark what happened.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, he said, \u201cI would\u2019ve opened everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo would you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot every secret is evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd not every truth belongs to whoever finds it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark said, \u201cI need to tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body tightened automatically.<\/p>\n<p>He noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat phrase should be illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got offered a promotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been there four months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not really a promotion.
