Somebody had to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mostly, probably.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy remove it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the envelope in the cabinet wasn\u2019t the real test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m starting to hate Walter\u2019s tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen chuckled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew you would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the test?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you would open it too early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Walter tell you what was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo now what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove to Hail &amp; Morrow.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had the envelope on her desk.<\/p>\n<p>Same handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Same sealed flap.<\/p>\n<p>She did not hand it over immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Mark noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you want to read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at Helen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Walter wrote it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have said because you\u2019re curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark laughed.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you hoping it says?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think part of me wants him to forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he doesn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen maybe you aren\u2019t ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I expected irritation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked almost disappointed that he didn\u2019t argue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would ready look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReading it without using it to decide what kind of person I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he forgave me, that wouldn\u2019t undo anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he didn\u2019t, that wouldn\u2019t mean I\u2019m required to stay the person he was angry with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I guess I want to know what he said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen handed him the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were six handwritten pages.<\/p>\n<p>Mark read the first silently.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He handed me the pages.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says to read it with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I did.<\/p>\n<p>Dad began without greeting.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2014<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, then somebody decided you had finally begun paying a debt that money cannot cover.<\/p>\n<p>Do not get sentimental. I did not say you finished.<\/p>\n<p>Mark laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>Helen smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wrote that he did not know whether our marriage would survive.<\/p>\n<p>He deliberately refused to predict it.<\/p>\n<p>Clare might stay.<\/p>\n<p>She might leave.<\/p>\n<p>Either decision could be reasonable depending on what happened after his death.<\/p>\n<p>Then he addressed Mark\u2019s fear directly.<\/p>\n<p>You keep believing that if Clare has enough independence, she will not choose you.<\/p>\n<p>That is backwards.<\/p>\n<p>If the only way someone stays is because their choices have been narrowed, they did not really choose you in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Mark covered his face.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Dad told him about Mom.<\/p>\n<p>About the early Hail &amp; Morrow disaster.<\/p>\n<p>How he had once feared that telling Evelyn the truth would make her leave.<\/p>\n<p>He hid debts.<\/p>\n<p>Delayed disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Tried to fix everything first.<\/p>\n<p>When Mom discovered the truth, she packed a suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had never told me that.<\/p>\n<p>Helen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left for four days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer sister\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>My parents.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage I had mythologized.<\/p>\n<p>Not perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Never perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Mom returned with conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Complete financial transparency.<\/p>\n<p>Repayment.<\/p>\n<p>No new debt without discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Counseling.<\/p>\n<p>Dad agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then violated one of the conditions six months later.<\/p>\n<p>Mom left again.<\/p>\n<p>This time for two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Helen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt strangely relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Not because my parents had suffered.<\/p>\n<p>Because their marriage had not survived through magic.<\/p>\n<p>It survived through rupture.<\/p>\n<p>Work.<\/p>\n<p>Choice.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wrote that the second time Mom returned, he finally understood something.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn staying was meaningful only because leaving was genuinely possible.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had built my trust around the same principle.<\/p>\n<p>Security was not designed to end my marriage.<\/p>\n<p>It was designed to ensure staying, if I stayed, would be a choice.<\/p>\n<p>Mark whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wrote:<\/p>\n<p>You are afraid of Clare\u2019s freedom because you confuse being chosen with being necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Stop trying to be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Become someone worth choosing.<\/p>\n<p>I had to pause.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was not gentle in the next pages.<\/p>\n<p>He named the loans.<\/p>\n<p>The children\u2019s money.<\/p>\n<p>Stonebridge.<\/p>\n<p>Emma.<\/p>\n<p>Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>The habit of creating plans around other people.<\/p>\n<p>Then he wrote:<\/p>\n<p>You are not uniquely broken.<\/p>\n<p>You are also not uniquely forgivable.<\/p>\n<p>Do the work and let other people decide what your work means to them.<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>No blessing.<\/p>\n<p>No curse.<\/p>\n<p>No inheritance promise.<\/p>\n<p>No instruction that I forgive him.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end, Dad wrote:<\/p>\n<p>If Clare leaves, respect it.<\/p>\n<p>If Clare stays, respect that too.<\/p>\n<p>Do not turn either outcome into proof that you are good or bad.<\/p>\n<p>She is a person, not your verdict.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the pages.<\/p>\n<p>The last paragraph was shorter.<\/p>\n<p>And for God\u2019s sake, get a job.<\/p>\n<p>Mark laughed so hard he started crying again.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed too.<\/p>\n<p>Even Helen.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, grief loosened its grip.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was dead.<\/p>\n<p>But his voice was in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Not as authority.<\/p>\n<p>As memory.<\/p>\n<p>Mark wiped his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>I loved you too.
