Small ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad had created investment accounts for our daughter Emma and our son Luke when they were children.<\/p>\n<p>We rarely discussed them because Dad intended the money for adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty thousand total.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room sway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took money from our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to be temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was custodian on the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Dad named both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe named me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I handled finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That almost made me laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you repaid it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my coat.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, it\u2019s midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what time it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should finish this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. We haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hope flickered across his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cTomorrow I\u2019m calling Samuel about the children\u2019s accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hope vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t drag the kids into this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou dragged them in five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not make it better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll destroy how they see me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped at the door.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood something Dad had written.<\/p>\n<p>Fixing a consequence did not erase the choice that caused it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the truth changes how they see you,\u201d I said, \u201cthat isn\u2019t something I created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I left.<\/p>\n<p>At Dad\u2019s house, I turned on the dining-room lamp and opened his journal.<\/p>\n<p>I searched for Emma.<\/p>\n<p>Luke.<\/p>\n<p>Custodial.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had not known.<\/p>\n<p>That realization hurt in a strange way.<\/p>\n<p>There were secrets even he had never discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Then, tucked between two pages near the back, I found a folded statement from one of the children\u2019s accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had highlighted a withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>Forty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it, in shaky handwriting, he had written:<\/p>\n<p>Ask Mark.<\/p>\n<p>The date was six weeks before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had found it.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I knew the final weeks of his life had contained far more confrontation than anyone had told me.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28395\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Dad Had Confronted Mark Before He Died, and the Missing Conversation Changed What I Thought His Final Weeks Had Been Like<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cAlmost none.\u201d Mark\u2019s words sat in the kitchen between us.
