The financing collapsed. Twelve thousand became thirty thousand. Talked to your employer? Planned health insurance? Calculated expenses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou quit because you thought I was about to become rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word came out calm.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was wealthy. I inherited assets through a trust. You made a decision as though that wealth automatically became yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know exactly who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed harder than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that evening, I saw fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not fear of losing money.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of losing the version of our marriage he thought was permanent.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had been asking myself the same question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re staying here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this is Dad\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur house is your home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight this is where I need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you\u2019re just shutting me out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shut me out for eleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost asked how.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I picked up the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze dropped to the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad kept the outstanding balances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know roughly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the dark window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree hundred-something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloser to four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His head turned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter partial repayments, fees, and the notes he never marked satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI paid more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we\u2019ll verify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel and I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That worried him.<\/p>\n<p>I saw it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does Samuel need to be involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause these are estate assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then realization arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe estate could demand repayment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He stood so quickly the chair legs scraped the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, you wouldn\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere it is again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re already deciding what I\u2019ll do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You said I wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine. I\u2019m asking. Are you planning to call the loans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t decided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa could lose her business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa\u2019s note isn\u2019t the same as yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed again.<\/p>\n<p>That was interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did that surprise you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the money Dad gave me for Melissa wasn\u2019t formally hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a new tension settle into my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loaned it to me because she couldn\u2019t qualify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hundred and forty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou borrowed one hundred forty thousand dollars in your name for Melissa\u2019s bakery?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa thinks you gave her that money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows I helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thinks it was yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to sort it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor God\u2019s sake, Clare, does every decision I ever made need to become a trial?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gathered the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly the ones you hid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>That small distance between us felt larger than anything that had happened all week.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me as though he wanted to reach across it and didn\u2019t know whether he still had permission.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he picked up his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least tell me one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did Walter leave you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost couldn\u2019t believe he had asked again.<\/p>\n<p>After everything.<\/p>\n<p>After the notes.<\/p>\n<p>After the lies.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing me step away from him.<\/p>\n<p>The number still mattered enough to surface.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cYou need to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Mark left.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until his car disappeared before locking it behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Then I returned to the dining room and sat beneath the pendant light.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s journal was still open.<\/p>\n<p>I turned back through the entries, slower this time.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere near the middle, one line caught my attention because it contained a name I didn\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Dalton.<\/p>\n<p>I read the entry twice.<\/p>\n<p>Mark came again. Says Dalton may contact Clare if debt unresolved. Paid Mark $35,000. Told him this is the last time.<\/p>\n<p>The date was six years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard of Eric Dalton.<\/p>\n<p>Below the entry, Dad had written one more sentence.<\/p>\n<p>I do not believe Mark told me the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>An unfamiliar number appeared.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Then a text arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Clare, this is Eric Dalton. I heard about Walter. I\u2019m sorry.
