my father’s second dose.

Thomas insisted Reed had.

Venn, predictably, claimed he received instructions indirectly.

The conspiracy had reached the stage where everyone suddenly remembered hierarchy differently.

Ortiz laid out the problem.

“Venn says Thomas ordered the first exposure at the charity dinner.”

No dispute now.

“After Henry developed symptoms, Venn says Reed called and told him Thomas wanted the hospital dose increased.”

Reed denied making that call.

Thomas claimed he had specifically told Venn not to administer anything further because Henry’s sudden death would attract suspicion.

Both men had reasons to lie.

Reed faced murder exposure.

Thomas wanted cooperation credit.

Venn wanted to minimize his own decision-making.

Phone metadata showed Reed called Venn the morning Ethan carried the laughed.

“Don’t insult me.”

There he was.

Sharp.

Alive.

Reed became defensive.

“I’m trying to help.”

“No. You’ve been helping Thomas for years.”

Silence.

The room around us disappeared.

Dad had confronted Reed before his phrase.”

“Henry.”

“I know about the payments.”

“What payments?”

“I know about Larkspur.”

Silence.

“I know you gave Thomas my Silver Ridge evidence.”

Reed said nothing.

Dad continued.

“And I know somebody tried to make me sick three nights ago.”

Reed breathed audibly.

Then said:

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because if it was Thomas, you’ll warn him.”

A trap.

My father had been fishing for reaction.

Reed replied:

“You’re being paranoid.”

There it was.

The universal defense against people who noticed too much.

Dad laughed.

“So were Richard and Claire, apparently.”

My heart stopped.

He had connected the pattern before I ever knew.

Reed said:

“What does Claire have to do with this?”

“Nothing, if I can help it.”

Another painful line.

He was still trying to keep me out.

Then:

“I moved the archive.”

Reed’s breathing changed.

“Which archive?”

Dad caught it.

“I didn’t say there was only one.”

Silence.

Reed had exposed knowledge.

Then he said:

“Henry, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You’re making this worse.”

“Good.”

Dad sounded almost cheerful.

“I’ve spent years making it easier for people who deserved difficulty.”

Caroline closed her eyes.

Reed lowered his voice.

“Do not go to federal prosecutors yet.”

Dad went still.

“Why?”

“Because the network is larger than Thomas.”

“Who?”

“I can’t say on the phone.”

“Then come here.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Silence.

Dad understood.

“You’re afraid of him.”

Reed answered:

“Yes.”

That part sounded real.

“Then testify.”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

“You know how this works.”

“Yes.”

Dad’s voice hardened.

“That’s the problem.”

Then Reed said something important.

“If Thomas thinks you have medical proof, he will finish it.”

My skin crawled.

Dad paused.

“Finish what?”

Silence.

“Jonathan.”

“I shouldn’t have said that.”

No.

But he had.

Dad continued.

“So the first exposure was meant to warn me.”

Reed did not answer.

“Or weaken me.”

Nothing.

“And if I keep moving?”

Reed whispered:

“Stop.”

“Then he kills me.”

“Henry.”

“That’s what you’re telling me.”

“I’m telling you to stop.”

Dad’s voice became quieter.

“Whose side are you on?”

Reed did not answer.

The call ended.

Ortiz replayed the final minute.

Thomas’s claim that Reed ordered the second dose did not become impossible.

But the recording showed Reed warning Dad that Thomas would escalate.

That sounded more like a frightened accomplice than an independent mastermind.

Unless Reed was redirecting suspicion.

We needed more.

The archive had another call twenty minutes later.

Outgoing.

Henry to Peter.

Dad said:

“Reed cracked.”

Peter answered:

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“Do we move?”

“Tonight.”

My pulse quickened.

Move what?

Peter asked:

“Anne file?”

“First.”

“Master?”

“Already gone.”

Bishop Farmstead.

“Medical?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“I want a blood draw first.”

That explained the preserved sample.

Dad planned for toxicology.

Then he said:

“If I’m admitted tonight, do not let Reed near my room.”

Peter:

“Why Reed?”

“Because he knows Thomas intends a second move.”

There.

Dad did not believe Reed ordered it then.

He believed Reed knew.

Peter asked:

“Do you think Reed warned you because he wants out?”

Dad answered:

“I think he warned me because he wants absolution without consequence.”

That sentence described Reed perfectly.

Then Peter said:

“Should I contact Claire?”

Silence.

My throat tightened.

Dad answered:

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

Again.

“No.”

Peter:

“Henry.”

“I said no.”

“She should know.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Dad took a long breath.

“Because if Thomas knows Claire knows, he goes through Ethan.”

Peter:

“He already does.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell her.”

Dad:

“Tomorrow.”

Tomorrow.

One more day.

He died before it.

I looked at Caroline.

She looked back.

Neither of us needed to say it.

The illusion again.

There would always be tomorrow.

The recording continued.

Peter asked about Reed.

Dad replied:

“Tell him nothing.”

“Federal contact?”

“Use Ortiz’s predecessor.”

That was new.

Detective Ortiz looked up.

“Who?”

The file cut there.

But the next document in the folder identified the name.

Special Agent Michael Torres.

Retired.

Ortiz knew him.

“He trained me.”

Everyone stared.

“Can we contact him?”

“Yes.”

Torres answered from Arizona.

When Henry Caldwell’s name was mentioned, he went silent.

Then said:

“I’ve been waiting for someone to call.”

Of course.

He still possessed a sealed statement Henry sent through Peter.

Never formally entered because Henry died before the planned meeting.

Torres had preserved it privately after being ordered by a supervisor to close the preliminary inquiry.

“Which supervisor?”

Jonathan Reed was not his supervisor.

Different agency.

The supervisor was a man named Charles Mercer.

My skin tightened.

“Mercer?”

Olivia looked up.

Caroline did too.

Family?

Mara checked.

Charles Mercer.

Thomas’s first cousin.

Former federal supervisory agent.

Deceased five years ago.

There.

The institutional leak was not only Reed.

The network had family inside law enforcement too.

Torres continued.

Charles shut down Henry’s preliminary inquiry after Reed characterized the evidence as unreliable.

Reed did not act alone.

Again.

Nobody did.

“What’s in Henry’s statement?” Ortiz asked.

Torres sent a secured scan after verifying authority.

Dad had written it the day before entering the hospital.

He described symptoms.

Named Thomas.

Named Reed as compromised.

Named Charles Mercer as suspected obstruction.

Then:

I believe an attempt may be made to incapacitate or kill me under cover of cardiac illness.

My hands went cold.

He knew.

I read further.

If this occurs, investigate Lawrence Venn.

There.

Dad had identified the doctor.

How?

A note attached.

Venn attended judicial dinner immediately before onset of symptoms and had prior financial links to Blackwood disability consulting.

Dad had traced him quickly.

Then:

Reed knows I suspect Venn.

That mattered.

If Reed truly ordered the second dose, he knew Dad had already named Venn.

Why would he use the same doctor again?

Possible desperation.

But strategically foolish.

Thomas, however, might believe doubling down could kill Henry before disclosure.

Dad’s final paragraph:

I do not know whether Jonathan Reed will help Thomas harm me. I believe he knows harm is planned and has chosen not to stop it.

A precise accusation.

Not mastermind.

Complicit through knowledge.

That matched the phone call.

Ortiz returned to Venn.

Confronted him with the recordings.

His story changed again.

Not dramatically.

Enough.

“Who ordered the second dose?”

He cried.

“Thomas.”

There.

“Why did you say Reed?”

“Reed called me.”

“What did he say?”

“That Thomas was furious.”

“Did he tell you to increase dose?”

“No.”

“What did he tell you?”

“To leave town.”

Silence.

Reed had warned Venn too.

Not because he was innocent.

Because he knew Thomas was escalating.

“What happened after that?”

“Thomas called.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes later.”

“What did he say?”

“That Henry had named me.”

“How would Thomas know?”

“Reed.”

So Reed leaked Dad’s suspicion.

Thomas then acted.

“What did Thomas order?”

“A second dose.”

“Exact words?”

Venn swallowed.

“‘Make sure he doesn’t walk out of that hospital.’”

Silence.

Clearer than anything before.

“Did you prepare the thermos?”

“Yes.”

“Did Thomas tell Ethan?”

“No.”

“Why use Ethan?”

“To make Henry’s family associate the delivery with someone expected.”

Me.

A husband bringing tea to his father-in-law.

Perfectly ordinary.

“And Reed?”

“He knew Thomas was going to act.”

“Did he approve?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he try to stop you?”

“He told me to run.”

Not stop.

Run.

Reed had chosen self-protection over intervention.

Again.

The hierarchy clarified.

Thomas ordered.

Venn prepared.

Ethan unknowingly delivered.

Reed knew and fled morally before he fled physically.

Charles Mercer helped suppress the investigation.

Different kinds of culpability.

All real.

Thomas’s claim that Reed ordered the second dose was another attempt to distribute his own responsibility.

Ortiz confronted Thomas with Venn’s revised statement.

He denied.

Then she played the Henry-Reed call.

Thomas’s face changed.

He knew the room had narrowed.

Then Torres’s preserved statement.

Then Venn’s quote.

Make sure he doesn’t walk out of that hospital.

Thomas asked for his lawyer.

For once, he stopped bargaining.

My father’s death had a shape.

Not perfect.

Courts would decide proof.

But enough for charges.

Enough for me to stop imagining every possible version.

I went outside.

Caroline followed after several minutes.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

We stood beside the parking lot.

“I keep thinking Dad knew.”

“He did.”

“He knew enough to be afraid.”

“Yes.”

“And still told Peter tomorrow.”

“Yes.”

“I’m angry at him.”

“You should be.”

“And I miss him.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know how both fit.”

Caroline looked at me.

“They don’t need to fit.”

My mother’s lesson again.

Contradictions could remain.

Then Olivia came outside.

Her eyes were red.

“Thomas has been charged in connection with Henry?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“My father.”

The word sounded strange in her mouth.

Not Richard.

Thomas was Caroline’s father.

Olivia’s biological father was Richard.

But Thomas had raised proximity around her entire life.

Family language had become unstable.

Olivia corrected herself.

“Thomas.”

Caroline took her hand.

Olivia whispered:

“I don’t know who I’m supposed to hate.”

Caroline answered:

“Nobody is assigning homework.”

Olivia laughed through tears.

That was perhaps what they needed most.

No inherited obligation.

Then Daniel approached.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“The board filed in court.”

My stomach tightened.

“About dissolution?”

“Yes.”

“What are they asking?”

“Authority to implement Richard’s amendment under independent supervision.”

“Meaning Blackwood Development breaks apart.”

“Not necessarily completely.”

Richard’s amendment permitted restructuring if the board concluded clean assets could survive independently.

Several regional construction units might continue.

The foundation would be separated.

Questionable real estate would enter review.

Employee protections would be negotiated.

The Blackwood name might disappear from corporate ownership.

Ethan had submitted an affidavit supporting independent restructuring.

I stared.

“He supported it?”

“Yes.”

“Did his lawyer tell him to?”

“Apparently his lawyer recommended silence.”

I almost smiled.

Ethan chose the opposite.

The affidavit admitted his control derived from documents now credibly disputed.

Requested no restoration of his voting authority.

Asked the court to prioritize employees and legitimate creditors over family ownership.

That sounded like something Richard had wanted.

Late.

But Ethan’s choice.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because your father’s declaration required notice to you.”

“Do I need to respond?”

“No.”

“Good.”

I had spent enough time inside Blackwood governance.

Then Daniel gave me one more document.

Ethan’s affidavit contained a paragraph about me.

Not personal.

Legal.

He affirmed that I had not knowingly participated in Silver Ridge, Silver Crest, forged transactions, medical planning, or estate searches.

He explicitly waived any claim that spousal privilege or joint ownership should be used to implicate me in his conduct.

Useful.

Necessary.

Not romantic.

Good.

I handed it back.

“Anything else?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Ethan has been charged.”

My chest tightened despite myself.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Obstruction-related counts.

Additional charges concerning the competency scheme.

No charge for Henry’s poisoning.

No evidence he knew.

Daniel watched me.

“What are you feeling?”

“I don’t know.”

“Fair.”

I thought of Ethan in the hallway the night he hit me.

The second phone.

Until Claire stops being useful.

Then Ethan in the conference room saying the choice to proceed with my incapacity had been his.

The charges made sense.

Sadness did too.

I asked:

“Is he detained?”

“Yes.”

“Did he ask to speak to me?”

“No.”

That answer mattered.

He was respecting the boundary.

Change after the audience left.

Maybe.

I did not need to decide.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

For one second, old fear returned.

But the message was from a court victim-services coordinator.

Information regarding protective orders and case notifications.

Ordinary process.

No secret threat.

No hidden initial.

No O.

I saved the contact.

Then turned off the phone.

For the first time since finding Ethan’s second device, silence did not mean someone was planning around me.

It meant there was nothing I had to answer yet.

Click here to continue reading: PART 40: The Blackwood Empire Began Coming Apart in Court, and I
