she entered Richard’s study at 11:08 p.m.

Medication bottle in hand when she emerged.

Samuel arrived through the side entrance at 11:15.

Left at 11:26.

Margaret returned upstairs at 11:31.

Richard collapsed less than an hour later.

Her lawyer advised silence.

Margaret ignored him.

“I took the noticed.

“He wanted you to do what?”

“Hide the bottle.”

“Where?”

“In my dressing me.

“Because I called him.”

Silence.

Ortiz’s voice sharpened.

“After Richard told you he didn’t trust Samuel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked ashamed.

“Because I thought Richard was becoming paranoid.”

There was the word.

Again.

She had used it then too.

Not only after Richard’s death.

“When did you call Samuel?”

“From the indirectly.

“Where was it?”

“In my dressing room.”

“Did Samuel know?”

“He followed me upstairs.”

“Camera?”

“Hallway angle doesn’t cover the dressing room.”

“What happened?”

Margaret breathed slowly.

“He told me Richard had been under tremendous stress.”

“Then?”

“He said if I let Richard start accusing staff and lawyers, the dissolution do?”

“I showed him the bottle.”

The room became still.

“Did Samuel touch it?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He opened it.”

“What did he do?”

Margaret stared at her hands.

“He poured the pills onto the dresser.”

My skin crawled.

“Then?”

“He looked through them.”

“Did he replace anything?”

“I didn’t see.”

“Were you watching?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I was arguing with him.”

“About?”

“The company.”

Of course.

“Then?”

“He put the pills back.”

“Did he take the bottle?”

“No.”

“Where did it go?”

“I returned it to Richard.”

Ethan, listening through counsel, closed his eyes.

Ortiz asked:

“When?”

“After Samuel left.”

“So Richard took medication from a bottle Samuel had handled.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Richard Samuel touched it?”

Margaret’s voice dropped.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard had told me not to call him.”

“You knew Richard suspected Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“And you gave Samuel access anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Then returned the bottle without warning Richard.”

“Yes.”

No denial.

No excuse capable of surviving the sequence.

Margaret cried silently.

“I thought if Samuel checked it and said it was fine, Richard would calm down.”

Ortiz asked:

“Did Samuel say it was fine?”

“Yes.”

“Did he identify the wrong-tasting pill?”

“No.”

“Did that concern you?”

“It should have.”

“But?”

“I wanted him to be right.”

There.

Not evidence failure.

Emotional selection.

She chose the explanation that preserved normality.

Richard took pills after that.

Two adulterated tablets were likely already inside or inserted then.

We might never know which.

But Margaret’s act gave Samuel opportunity.

“Did you know Thomas had supplied pills?” Ortiz asked.

“No.”

“Did you know Venn had tested the drug on Maria?”

“No.”

“Did you know Martin expected Richard’s incapacity?”

“No.”

“Did you know Samuel intended harm?”

“No.”

“Did you know Richard feared him?”

“Yes.”

The distinction mattered.

Margaret was not part of the poisoning plan as currently proved.

But she ignored a direct warning and delivered access to the suspected person because she preferred the story in which Richard was overreacting.

Her loyalty helped create opportunity.

She had not planned murder.

She had made it easier.

Ethan asked through the speaker:

“Mother, why didn’t you tell us this earlier?”

Margaret looked toward his voice.

“Because after Richard died, Samuel told me if I admitted I had given him the bottle, everyone would think I killed my husband.”

“Did you believe him?”

“Yes.”

“So you lied.”

“Yes.”

“For nine years.”

“Yes.”

Ethan’s expression was difficult to read.

Maybe he wanted anger.

Maybe he recognized too much of himself.

Margaret continued.

“Samuel told me silence protected you.”

Ethan laughed once.

Of course.

Always him.

“You believed that too.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Martin said the succession would be challenged if Richard’s death became suspicious.”

There it was.

She had helped preserve Ethan’s inheritance by suppressing a fact about Richard’s death.

Not because she killed him.

Because suspicion threatened the transfer.

“So you knew the succession documents might be questioned,” Ortiz said.

“I knew they would be.”

“Why?”

“Richard had told me he intended to dissolve the company.”

“Then when papers appeared transferring control to Ethan?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I knew something was wrong.”

The room became completely silent.

This was more serious.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Martin forged Richard’s signature?”

“No.”

“But you knew the outcome contradicted Richard’s plan.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked at Ethan.

He looked away.

“Because I thought Richard had changed his mind before dying.”

Ortiz waited.

Margaret corrected herself.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“That is what I told myself.”

“What did you actually believe?”

“That someone had changed it for Ethan.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

“Did you ask him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That Richard’s final wishes were complicated.”

“And you accepted that?”

“I wanted to.”

She had known enough to suspect fraud.

Not enough to prove.

And chose not to pursue because the fraudulent result benefited her son.

That was complicity of another kind.

Ethan whispered:

“My whole inheritance.”

Margaret cried.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked at her.

“I believe you.”

The sentence surprised her.

Then he continued.

“That doesn’t make it smaller.”

She nodded.

“No.”

I thought of Anne’s letter.

Richard is not a monster.

He is a man who made a compromise, then another.

Margaret too.

Call Samuel.

Show bottle.

Say nothing after death.

Accept succession.

Protect Ethan.

One choice stacking atop another until admitting the first would expose all the rest.

Ortiz asked:

“Did anyone else know you handled the bottle?”

“Martin.”

“How?”

“Samuel told him.”

“Thomas?”

“Probably.”

“Reed?”

“I don’t know.”

Another leverage point.

No wonder Margaret spent years supporting instability narratives about me.

Thomas and Martin knew a secret that could make her look like Richard’s killer.

They could pressure her.

Maybe they had.

I asked:

“Did Thomas ever threaten you with the medication bottle?”

Margaret looked at me.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After Henry died.”

My chest tightened.

“What did he want?”

“For me to support Ethan taking control of the family trust.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Would you have otherwise?”

“Probably.”

She paused.

“But he made sure.”

“What exactly did he say?”

Margaret remembered.

“If Richard’s death ever becomes complicated, people will ask who had the pills.”

The threat was subtle.

Effective.

“So you became easier to control.”

“Yes.”

“And when Ethan wanted doctors to document that I was unstable?”

Margaret cried harder.

“Thomas reminded me.”

There it was.

I felt anger rise slowly.

“Reminded you of what?”

“That if I created trouble for Ethan, old questions might return.”

“So when you asked whether I had taken my medication at breakfast—”

“I was helping him.”

“Yes.”

“And protecting yourself.”

“Yes.”

At least she said it.

“You knew I wasn’t unstable.”

Margaret looked at me.

“I knew I had no evidence you were.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

“No.”

“Did you think I was?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Because Ethan told me things.”

“Things he manufactured.”

“Yes.”

“And you chose to believe them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret’s answer came quietly.

“Because believing you were unwell was easier than believing Ethan had become dangerous.”

The truth.

Ugly.

Human.

Not enough.

I nodded.

Ortiz paused the interview.

Margaret’s lawyer asked for time.

No one objected.

Outside the room, Ethan asked to speak with me.

I nearly said no.

Then accepted five minutes with Daniel nearby.

Ethan sat across from me.

No handcuffs yet.

But two federal agents remained outside.

“What?”

I asked.

“My mother lied about Dad.”

“Yes.”

“She knew the company transfer contradicted his plan.”

“Yes.”

“I keep waiting for something to become simpler.”

“It may not.”

He nodded.

“I thought if I learned Thomas manipulated me, I would feel less responsible.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He almost smiled.

“I thought learning Dad tried to stop everything would make me feel cheated.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

I waited.

“And ashamed.”

Both.

“I thought if Mom had known less, I could forgive her easier.”

“Can you?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s probably a more honest answer.”

He looked at me.

“I understand why you left.”

I did not respond.

“I’m not asking you to come back.”

“Good.”

“I just…”

He stopped.

“What?”

“I wanted to tell you before I speak to prosecutors again.”

“Tell me what?”

“There’s another thing I concealed.”

My stomach tightened.

Of course.

“What?”

“The night before I hit you.”

“The day before I found the phone.”

“Yes.”

“I met Thomas.”

“Why?”

“He showed me a report from one of the doctors.”

“About me.”

“Yes.”

“Real?”

“Some observations were real. Conclusions were exaggerated.”

“What did it say?”

“That stress, grief, and insomnia could support temporary incapacity if combined with family testimony.”

My throat tightened.

“Family testimony.”

“My mother.”

“Yes.”

“What did Thomas want?”

“To move immediately.”

“With the medical plan.”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

Ethan looked down.

“I said no.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because I knew it had gone too far.”

I stared.

“Then why were those messages on your phone?”

“Because Olivia and I were arguing about the same thing.”

“She objected to drugging me.”

“Yes.”

“You objected too?”

“To medication without consent.”

“But not to incompetency proceedings.”

“No.”

The distinction mattered.

Again, not enough to save him.

“Then what changed?”

“The merger.”

“How?”

“We needed your signature on the trust acknowledgment.”

“I refused to sign all the pages.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“Thomas said we were out of time.”

“And you agreed to proceed another way.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The afternoon before you found the phone.”

There it was.

The final step.

“You made the choice.”

“Yes.”

“Without Thomas tricking you.”

“Yes.”

“Without Richard’s influence.”

“Yes.”

“Without Margaret.”

“Yes.”

He looked directly at me.

“That one was mine.”

Silence.

He had reached the point where explanation ended.

“I wanted you to know because I keep hearing everyone talk about how Thomas built roads.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t want that story to become mine.”

“What story?”

“That I only did what he designed.”

He shook his head.

“He designed a lot.”

“But you chose.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

“You already said that.”

“I know.”

For once, repetition did not feel defensive.

It sounded like practice.

He was learning how to state responsibility without attaching a rescue clause.

Then Daniel entered.

“We have an update.”

“What?”

“Samuel has formally confessed to tampering with Richard’s medication.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Full confession?”

“Full enough to charge.”

“Thomas?”

“Named as supplier and organizer.”

“Martin?”

“Samuel says Martin knew Richard would be incapacitated but relief.

Not innocence regarding everything else.

But one line clarified.

Daniel continued.

“Hale knew an incapacity event was being planned.”

“Venn prepared the agent.”

“Yes.”

“Reed?”

“Not involved in Richard’s poisoning according to Samuel.”

“And Dad?”

“Separate case.”

The conspiracy was becoming legible.

Not clean.

Legible.

Then Ortiz entered.

Her expression told me there was more.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“The toxicology timeline for Henry is complete.”

My chest tightened.

“Was the tea the only dose?”

“No.”

Silence.

“What?”

“There was an earlier exposure.”

“Before the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“At the charity dinner?”

“Likely.”

My mind returned to Venn.

The judicial event.

He had been there.

“Then the tea…”

“May have been a second dose.”

My stomach turned.

“Why?”

“To ensure effect.”

Ethan went pale.

Ortiz continued.

“Venn has amended his statement.”

“What does he say now?”

“He admits dosing Henry’s drink at the charity dinner.”

I stared.

“So Dad was already poisoned before Ethan carried the tea.”

“Yes.”

“And then Venn prepared another dose.”

“Yes.”

“Thomas wanted him dead.”

Ortiz answered carefully.

“The repeated dosing materially strengthens that inference.”

No more plausible temporary arrhythmia.

One dose might be explained as incapacitation.

Two separated doses after symptoms began looked far more deliberate.

“Did Ethan know about the first?”

“No evidence.”

“Second?”

“Venn says no.”

Ethan stared at the floor.

The tea still mattered.

But he was not the origin.

Ortiz added:

“Thomas has requested another meeting.”

Caroline, standing nearby, laughed bitterly.

“What does he want now?”

“To revise his cooperation.”

“Of course.”

“What is he offering?”

Ortiz looked toward me.

“Who ordered Henry’s second dose.”

I frowned.

“Thomas.”

“He says not.”

“Then who?”

Ortiz answered:

“Jonathan Reed.”

The compromised prosecutor.

The man who had leaked Dad’s schedule.

The man who stole Anne’s file.

According to Thomas, Reed had stopped being merely an informant.

He had decided Henry needed to die.

Click here to continue reading: PART 39: Reed Claimed Thomas Ordered Henry’s Death, Thomas
