Contact federal authorities through independent channel.<\/p>\n<p>C.V.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Vale.<\/p>\n<p>O.V.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia Vale.<\/p>\n<p>My father had begun preparing disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had not prevented it permanently.<\/p>\n<p>He had delayed it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Henry died years later before finishing what he started.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Caroline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad contacted federal authorities?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched the drive index.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>A coded reference.<\/p>\n<p>F-9.<\/p>\n<p>Peter had mentioned nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas smiled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the part Henry feared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did contact someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA federal prosecutor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we reach the valuable part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already have a cooperation acknowledgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry gave that prosecutor evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the prosecutor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas waited.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you obstruct now, your cooperation ends now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>Then gave the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonathan Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel immediately searched.<\/p>\n<p>Former assistant U.S. attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Later private counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Then federal judge.<\/p>\n<p>Retired three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the name.<\/p>\n<p>Not personally.<\/p>\n<p>But my father had mentioned him.<\/p>\n<p>A colleague.<\/p>\n<p>A friend.<\/p>\n<p>Someone he respected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReed told Henry there wasn\u2019t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that true?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I paid him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Another layer.<\/p>\n<p>Not family.<\/p>\n<p>Not Blackwood.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The institution my father finally trusted.<\/p>\n<p>Compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReed gave me copies of what Henry submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is how I knew Henry was moving against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuspected a leak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know Reed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did he keep investigating instead of finding another prosecutor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas smiled without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause once a judge begins wondering whether federal law enforcement is compromised, he becomes cautious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too cautious.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>My father had spent years building redundancy because the first official route failed.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement was not the secret he feared most.<\/p>\n<p>The betrayal after it was.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz was already making calls.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Reed\u2019s retirement did not place him beyond investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Mara opened the ledger recovered with the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Consulting fees.<\/p>\n<p>Property transactions.<\/p>\n<p>One recurring recipient disguised through an entity.<\/p>\n<p>J.R. Advisory.<\/p>\n<p>The amounts began seventeen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Continued for nine.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The last payment occurred three weeks after my father died.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat someone inside federal law enforcement was leaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know Reed specifically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did the payments stop after Dad died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He had not expected that question.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas looked at his attorney.<\/p>\n<p>His attorney said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not answer without conferring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas leaned close.<\/p>\n<p>They whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Thomas faced us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Reed\u2019s job was finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo tell me what Henry had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t explain Dad\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did Reed do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before he answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave me Henry\u2019s travel schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s final trip.<\/p>\n<p>His hospital admission.<\/p>\n<p>The days before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had known where he would be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you kill my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Reed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Henry\u2019s death frightened me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed natural causes until I learned someone had accessed his storage account the same night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat storage account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the legal archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonal records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho accessed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Thomas sounded genuinely unsettled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry died before I was ready for him to die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence was monstrous.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps true.<\/p>\n<p>He had preferred enemies alive when they remained useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone removed one file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died when I was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could her file have to do with any of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe Dad kept a secret file about my mother for decades and you never found out why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly what I\u2019m telling you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry never mentioned Claire\u2019s mother to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter, reached by secure call, said the same.<\/p>\n<p>He knew of the file.<\/p>\n<p>He never opened it.<\/p>\n<p>My father had kept it personally.<\/p>\n<p>No archive index.<\/p>\n<p>No duplicate.<\/p>\n<p>No shared access.<\/p>\n<p>One file.<\/p>\n<p>Removed the night he died.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew it existed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the observation glass.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan was not behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret was.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Blackwood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s file had somehow connected my father to Richard before Ethan ever met me.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever was inside had disappeared the night my father died.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28271\">Click here to continue reading: PART 34: Richard Knew My Mother Before I Was Born, and Margaret Finally Explained Why Henry Had Kept Their Connection Hidden From Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas Mercer refused to describe the agreement over the telephone.
