again.”

“Did he mention Samuel?”

“No.”

Maybe Richard still hoped Samuel could be salvaged.

Or needed him as an informant.

Patterns.

Always the same.

After the call, Ethan stood by the window.

“My father knew someone tested poison in his case.”

“Probably.”

“And he died.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Henry did the same.”

“Yes.”

“So did Caroline.”

She heard.

“Yes.”

He looked toward her.

“You all kept waiting for enough nodded.

“I’m not criticizing.”

“What are you doing?”

“Trying to understand why everyone thought they had one more day.”

Nobody answered.

That might have been the central illusion.

One more day.

One more document.

One more quiet compromise.

Then truth.

Except consequences did not wait politely.

Ortiz’s phone rang.

Canadian authorities.

They had intercepted Hale and Venn before either reached the storage facility.

Both arrested.

The medical archive secured.

Inside were original notes.

Dr. Venn’s dosage calculations.

Samuel’s initials.

Payments authorized through a Mercer entity.

And a legal memorandum drafted by Steven Hale.

Subject:

Contingency following R.B. incapacity.

The plan was explicit.

If Richard survived but became medically impaired, petition for temporary authority.

If he died, implement succession documents.

Martin’s role appeared in an appendix.

Margaret’s consultation authorization appeared as supporting evidence that “family concerns” existed.

Her words had been weaponized into legal justification.

Ethan read the memo.

Then asked the question I knew was coming.

“Was my mother part of the conspiracy?”

Ortiz answered carefully.

“Evidence shows she sought to delay dissolution and signed documents without understanding their full use.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I know.”

“What does evidence memo.

Risk if R.B. resists medication strategy: expose E.
