This one dissolved differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you save it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Henry asked where.<\/p>\n<p>Richard replied:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside the blue correspondence box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me that was empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin snapped:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at both men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou searched my father\u2019s things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither answered.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had access to the medication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouse staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard breathed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas didn\u2019t need access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence in the conference room.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked directly at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel did not deny it.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen say what you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Samuel met Thomas two days before I became ill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamn you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s recording did not care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Samuel asked whether I still intended to dissolve the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me I was going to destroy everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The present Samuel looked toward Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you poison him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>On tape, Henry asked Richard the same question in different form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho do you believe acted with Samuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard took several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Richard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel could get into my home. Martin could alter what came after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Succession.<\/p>\n<p>Estate documents.<\/p>\n<p>Medical assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>One man handled death.<\/p>\n<p>The other handled consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Martin stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to listen to accusations from a dying man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was dying because of you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin froze.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Martin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he prepared the revised succession documents after I told him I intended to dissolve the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst your instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho would benefit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My husband recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>Richard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I do not believe Ethan knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>The one mercy inside the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>Richard:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whoever did this may have convinced themselves they were protecting him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Present-day Ethan looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody expected that.<\/p>\n<p>He looked suddenly older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI protected the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father was going to destroy everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you killed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not full denial.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet confession.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas gave me tablets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin shouted:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said they would make Richard sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed his medication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo pills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo delay the dissolution meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou poisoned him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told the dose wasn\u2019t fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stood again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s voice whispered through my receiver.<\/p>\n<p>We have probable cause. Keep distance.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s hands curled.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered his warning in the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>I said quietly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His chest rose once.<\/p>\n<p>Then fell.<\/p>\n<p>He sat back down.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel watched the movement.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps for the first time, Ethan had chosen restraint while the person who helped kill his father sat three feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard took both pills too close together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put them in the bottle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gave them to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Martin said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou prepared the emergency succession papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not mean I knew about poison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Richard would be incapacitated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged the amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI corrected an unstable man\u2019s late decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is forgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was continuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word made me sick.<\/p>\n<p>Another version of containment.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s tape continued beneath the argument.<\/p>\n<p>Then my father asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Samuel poisoned you and Martin changed the estate, why are you telling me instead of police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Martin stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s voice became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew I was changing the succession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret knew.<\/p>\n<p>Henry asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know Samuel altered your medication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why mention her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she begged me not to dissolve the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Richard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Ethan would have nothing left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had defended her son again.<\/p>\n<p>Henry:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she participate in the replacement documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That uncertainty was worse than accusation.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin brought papers to the house. Margaret witnessed one signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich signature?\u201d Henry asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard sounded suddenly weak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry, if I die before this is fixed, do not assume Margaret understood what she signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A strange mercy.<\/p>\n<p>Even dying, Richard distinguished evidence from suspicion.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut ask her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Ended.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward the empty chair where his father once sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew you poisoned him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he still didn\u2019t call police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at me instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Henry convinced him the larger network mattered more than one prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father again.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing strategy over immediate truth.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded broken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Martin moved.<\/p>\n<p>Fast.<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed one archive tube from the table.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel shouted.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Martin pulled a lighter from his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The tube was metal, but the papers inside were not.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice came through my receiver:<\/p>\n<p>Move back.<\/p>\n<p>Martin held the flame near the tube\u2019s open cap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne step and this burns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan froze.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel swore.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve known me twelve hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded toward the cassette recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept Richard\u2019s confession for leverage. You kept the original agreement for leverage.
