disappointing.

After so many family secrets, coercion, guilt, and twisted loyalty, one betrayal had apparently begun with money.

“How much?” Daniel appreciate.”

Olivia pulled back.

“Correct.”

For a moment they looked like sisters rather than evidence custodians and survivors.

Then Olivia’s expression changed.

“What Thomas said about Richard.”

Caroline nodded.

“I heard.”

“He asked Thomas to pressure Mom.”

“Yes.”

“But didn’t know about the blackmail.”

“Apparently.”

“Does that matter?”

Caroline took her time.

“Yes.”

Olivia looked surprised.

“It doesn’t excuse him.”

“No.”

“But it might.”

“Yes.”

Ortiz said, “Where?”

Caroline finally answered.

“Caldwell House.”

My father’s house.

My is.”

Caroline’s expression softened slightly.

“Henry covered it before you were born.”

A memory surfaced.

A circular stone patio behind the a steel access plate.

Open.

Caroline stopped.

“No.”

Ortiz crouched.

The cavity beneath the plate was empty.

“The originally.”

Margaret looked up.

Caroline continued.

“Richard changed his estate documents six months before he died.”

“To what?”

“Blackwood Development was supposed to be broken apart.”

Ethan stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He believed the old liabilities could not be contained.”

That word again.

“He wanted assets sold, employees transferred where possible, claims settled, records disclosed.”

Mara said quietly, “An orderly
