time I believed he understood the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Then one of the federal agents approached Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Mercer is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was under guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was transported after the shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agent shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone presented a federal transfer order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-three minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline stood.<\/p>\n<p>Her entire posture changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz asked, \u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Martin knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin was in custody.<\/p>\n<p>But information had always traveled through people we had not identified.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked toward her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward the original agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas doesn\u2019t care about this anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he care about?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone, surrendered and documented earlier, began ringing inside an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz checked the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz put it on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarrie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have stayed dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have learned accounting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His laugh was soft.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have someone you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia\u2019s hand immediately went to Caroline\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Olivia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked around.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone important seemed present.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel checked his phone.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hospital officer assigned to Peter Lang was not responding.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring me your index, Caroline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhere does he mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the dark ridge beyond the Vale property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe place where this actually started.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
