You can bring Ortiz to the road, but nobody enters with you.<\/p>\n<p>C.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia saw the initial.<\/p>\n<p>Her breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The address belonged to a small church six miles away.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz immediately began planning.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She released me.<\/p>\n<p>Her face folded briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t tell her anything for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one years of absence could not be repaired through a messenger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell her only that you\u2019re safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The church was dark when we arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stopped at the road as instructed.<\/p>\n<p>I walked alone through the gate.<\/p>\n<p>The compass was in an evidence pouch Ortiz had reluctantly allowed me to carry after documenting it again.<\/p>\n<p>The church door stood unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, one lamp burned near the front pew.<\/p>\n<p>A woman sat beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair streaked with gray.<\/p>\n<p>Thin face.<\/p>\n<p>The same serious eyes from the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Vale stood when she saw me.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at the compass in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry really gave it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave me a childhood story about my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou finished the tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor which part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her coat.<\/p>\n<p>The brass key rested in her palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin spent twenty-one years looking for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot until tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith someone I trusted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur Finch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The compass maker.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter\u2019s key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA duplicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother test?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA contingency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone in this story loves contingencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFear makes architects of ordinary people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe duplicate opens the outer keyway but not the inner release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Martin stole something useless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot entirely.
