I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan changed.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz wanted Martin contained without sacrificing the key.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan would call him.<\/p>\n<p>Not meet him.<\/p>\n<p>Keep him talking.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure him into revealing whether the key remained in his possession.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at me before placing the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this goes wrong\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have walked away from your father after that meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should never have approached you again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt anger rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not use love to reduce what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou married me under a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen spent eight years searching around me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilt a medical case against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove does not make those things complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Not reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Just one moment without argument.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz handed him a clean phone.<\/p>\n<p>He called Martin.<\/p>\n<p>The old man answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want Claire quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that\u2019s impossible now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s something my father used to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he built an empire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also died trying to protect himself from what he built.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Martin said, \u201cRichard became weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father became afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, Ethan sounded certain about the distinction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d Martin asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProof you have the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then a photograph arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Brass key.<\/p>\n<p>317.<\/p>\n<p>Lying on a copy of the original Vale agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Mara immediately captured the image.<\/p>\n<p>The top of the document was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Vale Land Partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Blackwood Development Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Voss Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Caldwell &amp; Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s former law firm.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Martin said, \u201cNow you understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are protecting more than your family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2019s father signed those papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The thing Martin believed would break me.<\/p>\n<p>Not proof of intent.<\/p>\n<p>But participation.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cKeep talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin laughed over the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see? She still believes Henry was different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Do not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry helped create the trust structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan said, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t prove he knew the financing was fraudulent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears before he became a judge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProof?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Henry keep it instead of destroying it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>A good question.<\/p>\n<p>If the document damned my father completely, why preserve it for decades?<\/p>\n<p>Ethan pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have burned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said, \u201cGuilt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>He had chosen the argument that protected my father.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe truth.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe strategy.<\/p>\n<p>I refused to decide yet.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the key disappears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have destroyed it already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is my leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want it destroyed. You want the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never had access to Caroline\u2019s inner compartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not protecting the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re protecting yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Mara said, \u201cThat hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz immediately contacted officers near the development.<\/p>\n<p>Movement had been observed in an unfinished sales building.<\/p>\n<p>They had Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Then gunfire came through the radio.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>One shot.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz demanded updates.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Suspect down.
