My father acted like he expected him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were working together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Crane want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give it to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said something to my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Thomas had finally ruined everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey started arguing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Caroline?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Crane say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie looked directly at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Caroline should have been allowed to go to police twenty-one years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the quarry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another witness.<\/p>\n<p>Another person omitted from every version.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz asked, \u201cDid Crane hit you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the last thing you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutting the key on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father reaching for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam saying, \u2018You\u2019ve hidden enough for one lifetime.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you woke up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo were both men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind Crane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was already searching.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Crane\u2019s current address appeared.<\/p>\n<p>A rural property outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the road name.<\/p>\n<p>Vale Ridge Road.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>Mara noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old Vale property is on the same road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow close?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She checked.<\/p>\n<p>Less than three miles.<\/p>\n<p>Every person with a piece of this history seemed to be converging on the same land.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz received an update from officers searching Natalie\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n<p>They had recovered one document from the damaged laptop drive.<\/p>\n<p>A draft email Natalie never sent.<\/p>\n<p>Recipient: Claire Blackwood.<\/p>\n<p>Subject: If Ethan finds the compass.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz read the first surviving sentence aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Claire, the story your father told you about your mother\u2019s compass was not true.
