Caroline had evidence linking him to the old accounts.”

“What did you do?”

“I took her.”

“To where?”

“The bring it.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re the only one it’s useful to now.”

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at me.

“You exactly how people disappear.”

“So we plan it properly.”

“He explicitly said no police.”

“He also spent twenty years running from my father’s letter.”

“That doesn’t make him safe.”

“I didn’t say safe.”

Mara closed her laptop.

“She has a point.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re helping?”

“I’m saying Ray chose Claire because killing Claire would destroy his only leverage.”

“Unless Thomas is paying him.”

“Then he could have given Thomas the compass already.”

Daniel paced.

Olivia said quietly, “Ray is afraid of my father.”

Daniel turned.

“Enough to protect Claire?”

“No.”

“Then that doesn’t help.”

Margaret sat at the far end of the room.

“I think she should go.”

Everyone looked at her.

She met my eyes.

“Not because Ray is trustworthy.”

“Then why?”

“Because Ethan will find him if you don’t.”

That silenced us.

Margaret continued.

“My son has spent his whole life believing information belongs to whoever reaches it first.”

She looked tired.

“If Ray truly knows what happened to Caroline, Ethan will try to get diner.”

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

“That’s likely.”

“So we go before him.”

Daniel corrected me.

“We secure the area before you arrive.”

“Ray said no police.”

“He said none he can detect.”

The plan formed reluctantly.

Plainclothes officers would establish distant observation points.

No marked vehicles.

No one would approach unless I gave a prearranged signal or Ray attempted to move me.

I would carry no visible recording device.

Ortiz proposed a transmitter disguised inside the clasp of my bra.

Daniel objected to Ray’s condition.

Ortiz ignored him.

“Your safety is not negotiable.”

I agreed.

The law could sort out admissibility later.

Staying alive came first.

Before leaving, I needed one thing.

I called Ethan.

He answered on the first ring.

“You’re meeting Ray.”

Not a question.

“How do you know?”

“He contacted me too.”

“What did he say?”

“That you’re his preferred audience.”

“Did he give you the diner?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Stay away.”

He laughed softly.

“You think you can order me around now?”

“No.”

I looked at my bruised wrist.

“I think I can make consequences clearer.”

“What consequence?”

“If you show up, I tell police everything you admitted on the phone before you have time to build another explanation.”

Silence.

Then:

“You were going to do that anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Then that threat doesn’t work.”

He was right.

I changed tactics.

“If you come, Ray leaves.”

“He may.”

“And Caroline disappears again.”

That mattered.

Ethan breathed out.

“I want to know what happened to her too.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent twenty-one years wondering whether my father lied to me.”

That sounded true.

It did not make him innocent.

“Stay away.”

“I’ll try.”

“That isn’t enough.”

“It’s what you get.”

The line went dead.

Daniel had heard.

“He’ll come.”

“Yes.”

Margaret whispered, “Probably.”

Olivia looked toward the window.

“My father might too.”

“Does Thomas know the diner?”

“No idea.”

“Can you contact him?”

“He’s in custody.”

Daniel nodded.

At least one variable contained.

The drive to the diner took forty-five minutes.

Ortiz rode with me until the final staging point.

Then I transferred to my own small car, one the police arranged through an impound pool to avoid using anything Ray might recognize.

The sun had dropped low.

Long shadows stretched across fields.

The diner sat beside an old state road that had been bypassed years earlier.

Half the windows were boarded.

The sign had lost three letters.

No other cars were visible.

I parked.

My hands were cold.

Ortiz’s voice came softly through the hidden transmitter.

“We see you.”

I did not answer.

That was the arrangement.

If I touched my left earring twice, officers moved.

If I scratched my right wrist, they waited but prepared.

If I removed the earring, immediate intervention.

I stepped out.

The air smelled of dry grass and fuel.

The diner door stood open.

Inside, Ray Shaw sat at a booth.

The compass rested on the table.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother had carried it on hiking trips before illness made long walks impossible.

Seeing it in his possession made me angrier than I expected.

Ray was in his late sixties.

Heavy shoulders.

Close-cropped gray hair.

The kind of face that had been broken and healed more than once.

He gestured toward the opposite seat.

“You look like Henry.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“He’d hate it.”

I sat.

“Give me the compass.”

“Later.”

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“That part you got from him too.”

“Where is smiled.

“I know the model.”

Ray’s face hardened.

“You wired her?”

I moved toward my earring.

Ray pulled a gun.

Ethan
