them?”

“No.”

But I remembered something else.

The compass needle had never pointed north correctly.

My father once told me not to repair it.

I had laughed.

“What good is a broken compass?”

His answer returned to me after twenty years.

Sometimes the wrong direction is the point.

I looked at Daniel.

“We need to go back.”

He nodded.

Police were already being sent ahead.

Then my phone buzzed.

A security notification from the Blackwood estate.

FRONT DOOR OPENED.

Another.

BEDROOM MOTION DETECTED.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel saw it.

“Who?”

I opened the camera feed.

The bedroom appeared.

For several seconds, no one was visible.

Then Ethan walked into frame.

He went directly to my dresser.

Directly to the jewelry box.

He did not search.

He knew exactly where it was.

My chest tightened.

Ethan opened the lid.

Moved aside my mother’s bracelet.

My earrings.

My wedding jewelry.

Then he lifted the brass compass.

He stared at it.

Turned it over.

His expression changed.

Whatever was engraved beneath it meant something to him.

He reached for his phone.

Daniel was already calling police.

I watched my husband carry the compass out of the bedroom.

A minute later, the estate’s front-door sensor triggered again.

Ethan was leaving.

Mara asked, “Can you see his car?”

I switched cameras.

The driveway feed loaded.

Ethan ran toward his sedan.

Then stopped.

A second vehicle blocked the gate.

Black SUV.

A man stepped out.

Gray hair.

Long coat.

Olivia leaned over my shoulder.

Her face drained of color.

“That’s my father.”

Thomas Mercer raised one hand.

Ethan stood beside his car holding my mother’s compass.

Neither man moved.

Then Thomas reached inside his coat.

The camera had no audio from that distance.

I saw Ethan take one step backward.

Thomas produced a handgun.

Margaret gasped.

Daniel called out information to police.

On the screen, Thomas pointed the weapon at Ethan.

Then held out his other hand.

He wanted the compass.

Ethan looked down at it.

For eight years, my husband had built lies around that small object without knowing it was the thing he had been searching for.

Now he had found it.

And the man who had helped build the conspiracy twenty years earlier had arrived to take it from him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Thomas Pointed a Gun at Ethan for My Mother’s Compass, but the
