threaten her with?”

Richard’s voice weakened.

“Custody.”

“Me,” David said.

“Yes.”

Again.

Always them.”

“Yes.”

“For years.”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

One threat against Margaret had preserved Hale’s leverage for me.”

“Good.”

Richard accepted that.

Then:

“But she found another way.”

“The public benefit trust.”

“Yes.”

My mother had spent decades rebuilding the path Richard had blocked.

The conversion we signed was not simply Carol’s final idea.

It was the delayed completion of Daniel’s unfinished restitution plan.

My phone buzzed again.

The unknown sender.

One final message.

NOW ASK RICHARD WHO SENT YOU THESE.

I looked at the screen.

Then at David.

Richard heard the silence.

“What?”

“Someone has been sending us name.

“Margaret.”

David laughed bitterly.

“My mother is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then what are you talking about?”

Richard said:

“Margaret left instructions with someone before she died.”

“Who?”

Another remained quiet.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your mother left a sealed packet with instructions that it be opened only if the Bennett conversion was dropped.

“Jennifer has Margaret’s packet.”

Richard said, “If she followed instructions.”

We called.

Jennifer answered after two rings.

I asked directly.

“Did Margaret Mitchell leave you a packet to open after conversion?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Did you send us the messages?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Another pause.

“My assistant.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret’s intercepted.”

“By Hale?”

“No.”

Jennifer’s voice tightened.

“By Carol.”

I stared.

“My mother stopped Dad’s restitution foundation after his death.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Margaret’s letter says Carol believed Daniel’s plan would move the goal.”

“No.”

“She postponed it.”

“For twenty-seven years.”

“Yes.”

I looked around the room.

At Liam.

At David.

At Chloe.

At the old card proving which Sarah had been real.

My parents had both wanted the same destination.

They had disagreed about the route.

And every delay created new opportunities for people like Hale.

Jennifer said, “There’s one more page.”

“What?”

“Margaret wrote that if Daniel’s restitution plan ever resurfaced, David should be told why she refused the first time.”

David’s face tightened.

“Why?”

Jennifer read:

Because Richard threatened to take you from me, and I believed losing the plan was better than losing my son.

David sat down.

No one spoke.

Then Jennifer continued.

I was wrong.

My father’s last warning came back.

Do not inherit our fear.

Margaret had understood eventually.

So had Carol.

Maybe
