PACKAGE RECOVERED.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cR.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel Cole,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat package?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached for the brown envelope from locker 317.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were newspaper drafts.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Interview notes.<\/p>\n<p>And one sealed letter addressed:<\/p>\n<p>TO MY DAUGHTER.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis appears personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, he understood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa opened it.<\/p>\n<p>She read silently.<\/p>\n<p>Tears formed.<\/p>\n<p>She did not hide them.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, she handed me the final page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had written that her investigation began with Daniel Bennett\u2019s death and expanded after Carol showed her the hidden debt between Hale and Richard.<\/p>\n<p>She believed Hale was preparing to take Mitchell Coastal once Richard had built enough legitimate value.<\/p>\n<p>But Carol intended to prevent that.<\/p>\n<p>The Bennett trust was part of the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Not to make me rich.<\/p>\n<p>Not even primarily to compensate victims.<\/p>\n<p>It was designed to separate Richard\u2019s legitimate operating companies from Hale\u2019s hidden debt claims.<\/p>\n<p>Schedule D could destroy the holding structure that connected them.<\/p>\n<p>Hale feared dissolution because it might extinguish or expose the very debt instruments through which he controlled Richard.<\/p>\n<p>My choice was not simply inheritance versus restitution.<\/p>\n<p>It could determine whether Hale\u2019s secret ownership survived.<\/p>\n<p>I read the final paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel believed there was one original Meridian guarantee still enforceable.<\/p>\n<p>Hale had hidden it separately from the Recovery Group archive.<\/p>\n<p>If he produced it before Mitchell Coastal was dissolved, he could claim enormous secured interests.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly enough to seize much of the company during litigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d David asked.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa continued reading her mother\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel did not know.<\/p>\n<p>But Daniel had.<\/p>\n<p>My father again.<\/p>\n<p>A note in Rachel\u2019s file quoted him:<\/p>\n<p>The guarantee is not with the lender.<\/p>\n<p>It is with the collateral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat collateral?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>David went still.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s original collateral had not been cash.<\/p>\n<p>It had been property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich property did Richard pledge when he borrowed from Meridian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David searched his memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked through the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Then found the opening entry.<\/p>\n<p>Collateral description.<\/p>\n<p>One residential property.<\/p>\n<p>I read the address.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone in our family knew it.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s first house.<\/p>\n<p>The house David grew up in.<\/p>\n<p>The house Margaret Mitchell had retained after the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>The house that now belonged to Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>David stared at the address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale\u2019s guarantee is in Chloe\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Liam.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was urgent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not at the station anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Chloe got a call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Liam gave me an address.<\/p>\n<p>The same address printed in the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s original collateral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just got here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam, leave the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard something behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Glass breaking.<\/p>\n<p>A boy screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Liam\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone\u2019s inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28172\">Click here to continue reading: PART 28: Liam Was Trapped Inside the House Holding Hale\u2019s Original Guarantee, and Chloe Had to Choose Between Saving the Evidence and Saving Her Family<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard went to the hospital under federal guard.
