continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel Cole was Melissa\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned fully toward Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>She looked as though she had been waiting twenty years for the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother had the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot when we first met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter my mother died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still worked for David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Hale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBriefly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou notarized my forged deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled, but she did not look away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was trying to get close enough to find out whether Hale still had my mother\u2019s files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used my identity too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid David know who your mother was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Hale know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why Martin hired you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because of your notary work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to know what Rachel left you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached beneath her blouse and pulled out a thin chain.<\/p>\n<p>A small brass key hung from it.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been wearing it this entire time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince I was nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then removed the chain.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn held the key beneath the window light.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>A tiny number was stamped near the base.<\/p>\n<p>317.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn whispered, \u201cRachel found another box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol and I used numbered document lockers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old Carolina Federal basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat building was demolished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked at Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basement vault was incorporated into the new courthouse annex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz immediately reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would be in locker 317?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Rachel followed Carol\u2019s instructions, everything she couldn\u2019t publish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Recovery Group agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Rachel was investigating after Dad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she may have found more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa closed her fingers around the key.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother called me the night she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nineteen. Angry at her. I almost didn\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me that if anything happened, I should keep the key and never let a judge take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>We all understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018The Bennett man was right about the second ledger.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat second ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never heard of one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither had I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of my father\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger pages.<\/p>\n<p>The duplicate archive.<\/p>\n<p>All of them indexes to something deeper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would a second ledger contain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayments the Recovery Group never recorded officially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople outside the four founders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoliticians?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudges?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there was a second ledger, Martin probably created it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it could show who Hale controlled independently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz was already moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe secure the courthouse annex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa closed her hand around her mother\u2019s key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is potential evidence in multiple federal crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen give me the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died protecting whatever is in that locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m trying to secure it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Leaks.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n<p>Hale\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n<p>A courthouse built around an old bank vault.<\/p>\n<p>Too many coincidences had already turned out to be deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWe go together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is becoming a pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI dislike the pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard suddenly gripped the back of a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His knees buckled.<\/p>\n<p>David caught him before he hit the floor.<\/p>\n<p>For one second everything else disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard tried to push him away.<\/p>\n<p>David held on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dressing had darkened.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa called for the agents outside.<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me while David lowered him into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling me to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He managed a tired smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause for once, Sarah, something important does not require me in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if locker 317 contains what I think it does, do not let Hale\u2019s lawyers know you found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think it contains?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at Melissa\u2019s key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProof that Martin Hale was never working for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing was shallow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know he betrayed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the difference?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the second ledger will prove Martin owned me before I ever thought I owned him.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28171\">Click here to continue reading: PART 27: The Key Melissa\u2019s Mother Died Protecting Opened a Courthouse Vault, Where Hale\u2019s Second Ledger Revealed Who Had Controlled Richard From the Beginning<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ruiz wanted to send agents to Evelyn.
