Just making sure we\u2019re consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard went still.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard glared toward the other vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Richard\u2019s had when confronted with the founding-partner page.<\/p>\n<p>The men resembled each other most when trying not to feel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had enough to manage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the most insulting possible answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, they were not criminals, adversaries, father and son locked in decades of manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>They were simply two men realizing time was shorter than pride had assumed.<\/p>\n<p>Then David stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen joined us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWest culvert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame as the warehouse drainage?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComforting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We moved toward the tree line.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stayed with Richard.<\/p>\n<p>He objected.<\/p>\n<p>No one listened.<\/p>\n<p>The west access was a concrete opening half-hidden beneath brush.<\/p>\n<p>David went first.<\/p>\n<p>Owen followed.<\/p>\n<p>I went third.<\/p>\n<p>Mark caught up behind us.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel sloped downward beneath the records warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>After twenty yards, it opened into a stone chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Old foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Brick arches.<\/p>\n<p>Standing water.<\/p>\n<p>At the far end sat a steel door.<\/p>\n<p>Owen stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t there before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David examined it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at the frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward a keypad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Owen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel didn\u2019t mention one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David studied the keys.<\/p>\n<p>Six digits.<\/p>\n<p>Mark said, \u201cHale uses dates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell Coastal incorporation.<\/p>\n<p>We tried nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Too many wrong attempts might lock it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed scratches beside the keypad.<\/p>\n<p>Three numbers showed more wear.<\/p>\n<p>1.<\/p>\n<p>7.<\/p>\n<p>0.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober seventeenth,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>David stared.<\/p>\n<p>10-17.<\/p>\n<p>We needed two more digits.<\/p>\n<p>Year.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s death year?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>The night David found the file nineteen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>October seventeenth.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>David entered the six-digit date.<\/p>\n<p>The keypad beeped.<\/p>\n<p>Green.<\/p>\n<p>Owen stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale chose the date you discovered Daniel\u2019s file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat door code wasn\u2019t set for David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale uses dates that matter to the person he wants to remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe date mattered to Carol too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David pushed the door open.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a dry corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Metal cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes.<\/p>\n<p>The duplicate archive.<\/p>\n<p>Untouched at first glance.<\/p>\n<p>Then lights snapped on.<\/p>\n<p>We froze.<\/p>\n<p>A man stood at the far end.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>He held a handgun.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him stood Hale.<\/p>\n<p>No guards.<\/p>\n<p>No Mark.<\/p>\n<p>No Owen\u2019s people.<\/p>\n<p>Only the two men whose names had survived every layer of the story.<\/p>\n<p>Hale smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wondering which route you\u2019d use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David raised his gun.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer aimed at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>Hale looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already had one chance to kidnap me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wanted to kidnap you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou held Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent vocabulary.
