how much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral hundred million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Not several million.<\/p>\n<p>Several hundred million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepending on current coastal valuations, perhaps four hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa gave a small whistle.<\/p>\n<p>I felt nothing resembling excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Only nausea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother left me control of four hundred million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd most of it came from fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome early assets. Later growth was legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly what criminals say after the money has multiplied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accepted the point.<\/p>\n<p>Owen said, \u201cThat\u2019s why the choice matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDestroy it and compensate victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr keep it and potentially use more value to compensate them voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like you\u2019re trying to steer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just gave me an argument for keeping the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave you the complication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard said quietly, \u201cDissolution will destroy legitimate businesses too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are definitely trying to steer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least he admitted it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousands of employees,\u201d he continued. \u201cPensions. Suppliers. Families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose lives were destroyed to build parts of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo there is no clean option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had not left me a gift.<\/p>\n<p>She had left me responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>A terrible one.<\/p>\n<p>Owen folded the photocopy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need Schedule D before any choice means anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, an engine approached.<\/p>\n<p>Not federal vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>One car.<\/p>\n<p>Black sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone tensed.<\/p>\n<p>David reached for the gun.<\/p>\n<p>The sedan stopped outside the fence.<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n<p>Alone.<\/p>\n<p>His hands were visible.<\/p>\n<p>David moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark called from outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not here for Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s voice turned dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should hope not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here for Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course he was.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped into the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>His shirt was torn.<\/p>\n<p>There was dried blood near his collar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held up a plastic evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were eleven yellowed sheets.<\/p>\n<p>The missing ledger pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took them before Hale could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stepped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou removed them from the archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the FBI?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked toward David\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen for whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother has been dead a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark walked closer to the fence but stopped outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave me instructions years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n<p>Hale\u2019s man.<\/p>\n<p>Federal informant.<\/p>\n<p>And apparently another person my mother had recruited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long did you know Carol?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe said you\u2019ve worked with Hale twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo my mother knew what you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd still used you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo watch Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater everything got mixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a disgusting way to describe using your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you hurt her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bruises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe said you hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked genuinely stricken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grabbed her once at the house when she tried to leave with documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David moved toward the fence.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need these pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy give them to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Hale is already at the warehouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer. Two security men. Another vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know the vault entrance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Owen\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>They knew each other.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale thinks Schedule D gives him a third option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat third option?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said transfer or dissolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what the amendment says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale found an older clause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat clause?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergency preservation provision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>David noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard spoke slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the parent company faces imminent destruction, the trustee can temporarily suspend beneficiary action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you can stop me from dissolving it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil judicial review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd who would review it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudge Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whole structure snapped into focus.<\/p>\n<p>Hale did not need to force me to choose.<\/p>\n<p>He needed Richard to invoke the emergency clause.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer would validate it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Hale\u2019s management company could step in during the review.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That was not good enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf dissolution put thousands of innocent employees at immediate risk\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have to consider it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen swore.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>David stared at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You understand control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked whether there was a clean choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop pretending your version is cleaner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark held up the ledger pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale expects Richard to invoke the clause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why involve Sarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they still need her election eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey identify the people who helped build the structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone he never expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened the evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out the top page.<\/p>\n<p>Then turned it around.<\/p>\n<p>One name had been underlined by my mother decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Below it another.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Below that:<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>And under those, in the same column:<\/p>\n<p>RICHARD MITCHELL.<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a payment list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s voice lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFounding partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=28166\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: The Missing Ledger Pages Named Richard as One of Hale\u2019s Founders, and His Explanation Forced Me to Question Every Crime He Claimed Not to Know<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No one moved.
