Kidnapping. Possible homicide link.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He gave the address of Harbor Auto.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said, \u201cDo not leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>That instruction had become impossible.<\/p>\n<p>David replied, \u201cWe have reason to believe evidence is being destroyed at another location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard gave the warehouse address.<\/p>\n<p>David repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said nothing for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause that property is already under federal observation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone went still.<\/p>\n<p>David frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been building a case against Hale for interstate fraud, obstruction, and witness intimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Mitchell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve wanted to speak with you for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoin the queue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said, \u201cListen carefully. If Hale is heading to that warehouse, do not interfere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took the phone from David.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgent Ruiz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah Mitchell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then, \u201cSarah Bennett Mitchell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bennett Family Preservation Trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know about the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found it in Hale\u2019s records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Hale control it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he think he can?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he believes he can force the beneficiary to sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Liam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you know he kidnapped Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspected coercion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou suspected?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did not know who he had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark Dorsey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe made a small sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he working with Hale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has been a confidential source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room froze.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe whispered, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour source?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor eighteen months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David exploded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz answered sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark approached us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stared ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s helping the FBI?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does partly mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave us information about Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile helping Hale kidnap his wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz went silent.<\/p>\n<p>That silence was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lost control of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark has been running both directions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cDoes Hale know Mark is talking to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Mark remove the ledger pages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have done it for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz heard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that name too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mark removed eleven original pages from a county archive without authorization, he was not preserving chain of custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stole evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop saying possibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Finally someone else was tired of the word.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said, \u201cWe need everyone to stay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>No one believed that was going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ruiz added, \u201cThere\u2019s something else you need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe observation team at Richard\u2019s records warehouse lost visual contact ten minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCameras went down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen?\u201d Richard asked.<\/p>\n<p>Owen was still on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz heard the voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwen Pike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ruiz said, \u201cMr. Pike, where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloser than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my screen.<\/p>\n<p>David looked toward the garage entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shadow moved outside.<\/p>\n<p>Richard reached for a metal wrench.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa picked up an old breaker bar.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stepped behind Liam.<\/p>\n<p>The side door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Owen entered alone.<\/p>\n<p>No weapon visible.<\/p>\n<p>He looked older up close than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Gray at the temples.<\/p>\n<p>Tired eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A bruise across one cheek from the storage-unit fight.<\/p>\n<p>David raised the gun.<\/p>\n<p>Owen stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if I wanted you dead, I wouldn\u2019t walk through the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel worked for Carol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot until after he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he leave you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the duplicate archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy wait until now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Carol gave him one instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not reveal it while either Richard or Hale controls the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe board?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMitchell Coastal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the Bennett trust owns fifty-one percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means ownership exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut voting power is suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil the beneficiary makes the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words from the archive.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah holds choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat choice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen reached into his coat slowly.<\/p>\n<p>David kept the gun trained on him.<\/p>\n<p>Owen removed a folded document.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Old paper.<\/p>\n<p>Notarized.<\/p>\n<p>A trust amendment.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared halfway down.<\/p>\n<p>SARAH BENNETT \u2014 CONTINGENT BENEFICIARY AND ELECTING PARTY.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat am I electing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether Mitchell Coastal is dissolved or transferred intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I dissolve it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe underlying companies are liquidated under the trust terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gets the assets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictim restitution first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemaining value goes to the beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam whispered, \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I barely heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I transfer it intact?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cControl passes to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>The decision my mother had hidden for decades was not whether I received money.<\/p>\n<p>It was whether I inherited Richard
