I used to hide.”

Liam looked at me.

“Where was that?”

A childhood memory came back.

Storms.

Arguments.

Dark nights.

My father searching the house while pretending not to know.

I used to crawl beneath the stairs into a tiny utility space behind the coats.

The old house.

My childhood home.

The house my mother sold decades ago.

The letter continued.

If Daniel’s death is called an accident, assume the copy is still safe until Sarah can retrieve it herself.

Do not tell her until Richard and Martin are both exposed.

I looked at David.

“That’s exactly what Mom said on the tape.”

He nodded.

My father and mother had coordinated.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

There was one final line.

The forty thousand is not a bribe.

I stared.

Liam leaned closer.

“What does it say?”

I read aloud.

“It is payment for the duplicate archive.”

Melissa went still.

“What duplicate archive?”

I kept reading.

Samuel knows where it went.

I looked at Richard.

“Samuel Pike.”

“Yes.”

“Your employee’s brother.”

“Yes.”

“Who supposedly passed thirty-eight thousand to Donnelly.”

“Yes.”

“But Dad says the forty thousand paid for a duplicate archive.”

Richard frowned.

“Then the transfer to Donnelly may have been separate.”

“Or Samuel stole part of it.”

“Possibly.”

David looked at the brake lines.

“Or he sold information twice.”

I folded the letter carefully.

“Where would Samuel hide a duplicate archive?”

No one knew.

Then Liam pointed to the bottom of the page.

“There’s something else.”

A faint line.

Almost missed.

My father had written:

Samuel’s first loyalty is not to Victor.

Richard read it.

His face changed.

“To whom, then?”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No greeting.

A man’s voice.

Older.

Rough.

“You found Daniel’s box.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Owen Pike.”

I looked at Richard.

Owen continued.

“And everything your father wrote about Samuel was true.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Owen Finally Told Us Who Samuel Pike Was Really Protecting, and His Answer
