car, Victor could have ordered it.”

“Maybe.”

“And Victor worked for Richard.”

“Yes.”

“So Richard could have ordered it.”

“Yes.”

“But there’s no proof.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Do you believe Richard killed my father?”

David took a long time.

“I believe Richard created the conditions in which men around him started solving problems without needing instructions.”

That was worse.

Because it sounded true.

“He didn’t need to say kill him.”

“No.”

“People knew what outcome pleased him.”

“Sometimes.”

I stared across the street.

“So even if he never ordered it, he may still be responsible.”

“Yes.”

I hated that answer.

I hated that I agreed.

My phone rang.

This time the caller ID showed a number.

Evelyn.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

“Are you safe?”

“For the moment.”

“What happened?”

“I need Melissa.”

“She’s inside.”

“Put me on speaker.”

I did.

David stayed beside me.

Evelyn’s voice was steady.

“I found something Carol mailed me before she died.”

“What?”

“A photocopy of Daniel’s accident report.”

My grip tightened.

“Why did she send it to you?”

“She wrote one note across the top.”

“What?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Sarah, I’m sorry.”

“Read it.”

Paper moved.

Then she said:

“Victor did not touch the brakes.”

I stopped breathing.

David looked at me.

Evelyn continued.

“Samuel did not touch the brakes.”

A pause.

“Daniel did.”

I stared at the phone.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“There is only one more line.”

“What?”

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“Carol wrote: ‘He disabled them himself because he believed someone would search the car.’”

My skin went cold.

“That makes no sense.”

“Unless,” David said quietly, “he wasn’t planning to drive
