possibility occurred to me.”

I laughed softly.

“Wonderful.”

We turned onto a two-lane road.

Pines closed around us.

No houses.

No businesses.

Only darkness and our headlights cutting through it.

After another few miles, David turned onto an unmarked gravel lane.

At the end stood a small farmhouse.

One light burned inside.

Liam leaned forward.

“Who’s there?”

David frowned.

“No one should be.”

He killed the headlights.

We sat in darkness.

A shadow moved behind the kitchen window.

I whispered, “You said this place was safe.”

“It should be.”

“That phrase has not performed well tonight.”

David reached beneath his seat.

He pulled out a small handgun.

Liam recoiled.

“Dad.”

“It stays with me.”

I looked at him.

“Do you have a permit?”

“Yes.”

“That’s almost reassuring.”

David opened the door.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Sarah.”

“You have spent twenty years telling me to stay somewhere while you handle things.”

“This is different.”

“Yes.”

I opened my door.

“Now I know you’re usually hiding something.”

Liam got out too.

David looked at both of us.

“You are impossible.”

“That may be genetic,” Liam said.

We approached the house together.

David did not point the gun.

He kept it low beside his thigh.

The front door was unlocked.

He pushed it open.

The kitchen light was on.

A cup of tea sat steaming on the table.

Fresh.

Someone had been there seconds earlier.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Put the gun down, David.”

I knew that voice.

So did he.

Richard stepped into the kitchen.

He looked tired now.

Not weak.

Tired.

Older.

He wore no jacket, only a pale shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows.

His gaze moved from David to me, then Liam.

“I had hoped we could avoid this.”

David raised the gun.

Richard looked at it without fear.

“You won’t shoot me.”

“Don’t test that.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“You said that at thirty-two.”

David’s arm stiffened.

I looked at Richard.

“What are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you.”

“How did you know?”

“Because this house was never Carol’s secret.”

David’s face changed.

Richard saw it.

“You really thought she kept something from me for twenty-three years?”

He looked toward me.

“Your mother was clever, Sarah.”

Then he glanced at the cedar chest in Liam’s hands.

“But she was never as clever as she believed.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Richard
