Getting into your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike the picture of Mom in Boston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same method.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something cold move across my skin.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty years of habit.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe longer.<\/p>\n<p>Not random intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>A system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard threaten me directly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Carol, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the message say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stood and crossed to a file cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the lowest drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were plastic sleeves containing old photographs.<\/p>\n<p>She removed one.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized myself immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Younger.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant with Liam.<\/p>\n<p>Standing outside a grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had written something on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was unmistakably hers.<\/p>\n<p>HE KNOWS ABOUT SARAH.<\/p>\n<p>Under that, smaller:<\/p>\n<p>STOP FOR NOW.<\/p>\n<p>Liam covered his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I read the words twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t she tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she believed silence kept you safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the basement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol got sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had died of pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The decline had been fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew she was dying,\u201d Melissa said. \u201cAnd she knew the records would outlive her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she tried to move them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know they were moved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I helped with part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did they go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo several people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t tell me all the names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was tired of partial answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t trust any one person with everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Careful even when frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Especially then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she trust you with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompany records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she trust David with anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s silence answered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room shift again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid has it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said she trusted him with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout eleven months before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was long after our divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she trust him again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause David told her Richard was planning something involving you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened around the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t know the full plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.
