The ceiling fan turned above us with a faint mechanical click, moving warm air through a kitchen that no longer felt remotely familiar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody is watching the house,\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n<p>David gave the smallest nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Richard.<\/p>\n<p>He did not appear surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>That told me more than David\u2019s answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all know about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow about what?\u201d David asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SUV. Liam disappearing. The house being transferred into your name. Whatever happened to Chloe\u2019s wrist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe pulled her son closer.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s attention shifted toward her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>For one instant, something dark moved through his expression.<\/p>\n<p>Then it disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer wrist has nothing to do with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting. I didn\u2019t ask you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You don\u2019t get to say my name like I\u2019m embarrassing you at dinner. Where is our son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David rubbed the back of his neck. It was an old habit, one I remembered from arguments during our marriage. He did it when deciding which version of the truth would cause him the least trouble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Liam left because he thought staying here was dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean he tells me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe apparently tells you more than he tells me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for the handle of my suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know where he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where he works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reaction lasted less than a second.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Then his face reset.<\/p>\n<p>I saw it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know where he works,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you know where he\u2019s staying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hesitated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to keep you from making this worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed softly. \u201cYou stole my house and somehow I\u2019m the dangerous variable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not steal anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe county says you own it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly you could say something like that with a straight face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stepped toward us. \u201cSarah, listen to him for once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s expression changed, but I kept going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI listened to David for twelve years. I listened when he said I was imagining our financial problems. I listened when he said I was overreacting to women who somehow kept texting him after midnight. I listened when he said our divorce would be easier if I stopped asking questions. I listened long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>There were moments when restraint was wisdom. There were other moments when restraint merely made dishonest people comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the bakery box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you taking that?\u201d Chloe asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at it.<\/p>\n<p>I had almost forgotten I was carrying cookies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I brought them for Liam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer sounded ridiculous in the circumstances, but leaving them behind felt worse.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>David followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, if you go looking for him openly, you may lead somebody straight to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned. \u201cYou just told me you don\u2019t know who is watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know they care about Liam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Not ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>Selection.<\/p>\n<p>David knew pieces of this story and had decided I was entitled only to the ones he chose.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Heat pressed against me. The afternoon sun flashed off the windshield of the gray SUV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose vehicle is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>I walked down the steps.<\/p>\n<p>The SUV sat at the curb rather than in the driveway as I had first assumed, angled beneath a live oak. Its engine appeared to be off. I could not see through the windshield.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone and photographed the license plate.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, David said, \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked over my shoulder. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re drawing attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the people who are supposedly already watching us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed it again.<\/p>\n<p>Then I got into my rental and drove away.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the rearview mirror for the first ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The SUV did not follow.<\/p>\n<p>That should have reassured me.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Liam worked evenings at a seafood restaurant several miles from campus. He had taken the job because, according to him, tuition taught economics theoretically while rent taught it efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant was quiet when I arrived. Dinner service had not begun. Chairs were still upside down on several tables, and the air smelled of citrus cleaner and frying oil.<\/p>\n<p>A young hostess looked up from a stack of menus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I help you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking for Liam Mitchell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>It was slight, but after the afternoon I had just experienced, I noticed every hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he working tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face softened.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me a second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She disappeared through the swinging kitchen doors.<\/p>\n<p>A man in his forties emerged shortly afterward, drying his hands on a towel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re Liam\u2019s mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Ben. I manage evenings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Liam here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas he been coming to work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been taking every shift he can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer loosened something in my chest.<\/p>\n<p>Liam was alive.<\/p>\n<p>Working.<\/p>\n<p>Functioning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you last see him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he seem all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben\u2019s hesitation returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe seemed tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of tired?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kind where a nineteen-year-old\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry. The kind where an eighteen-year-old volunteers for closing shifts nobody wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced toward the kitchen doors. \u201cDo you know where he\u2019s staying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben looked toward the hostess.<\/p>\n<p>She suddenly became very interested in organizing menus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Liam asked you not to tell me, I understand,\u201d I said. \u201cBut I flew here today expecting to find him in the house I bought for him. Instead, my ex-husband\u2019s sister is living there with her children, the county record says my ex owns the property, and Liam\u2019s phone goes straight to voicemail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben stopped drying his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking you to violate his trust. I\u2019m asking you to help me make sure my son is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He watched me for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cWait here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He returned to the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>I stood beside the host station, listening to silverware being sorted somewhere out of sight.<\/p>\n<p>The bakery box was still in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>I put it on a nearby table.<\/p>\n<p>Ben returned carrying a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam left this with me about two weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew I was coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. He said if a woman named Sarah Mitchell ever showed up here asking questions, I should give her this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Liam had not predicted my visit.<\/p>\n<p>He had prepared for it.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>There was no letter.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Only an address.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it, three words had been written in Liam\u2019s hurried block printing.<\/p>\n<p>COME ALONE. PLEASE.<\/p>\n<p>I read them twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben shook his head. \u201cOnly that I shouldn\u2019t give it to his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe specifically said David?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid David come here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Liam here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey argued outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t hear everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could you hear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour son told him he wasn\u2019t going back to the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd David?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said something like, \u2018You don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re involved in.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded exactly like David.<\/p>\n<p>Always the holder of superior information.<\/p>\n<p>Always the person deciding what everyone else was allowed to understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid David threaten him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t yell. Didn\u2019t touch him. But Liam came back inside looking like he\u2019d just escaped something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the paper carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Mitchell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Ben lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam\u2019s a good kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s also been scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded because if I tried to answer, I might cry in front of a stranger.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, I sat in the rental car and entered the address into navigation.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Inland.<\/p>\n<p>I called Liam.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>I texted him.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m coming. Tell me if I shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The sensible thing would have been to call the police.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that.<\/p>\n<p>But I also knew my son had gone to considerable effort to leave me instructions that said COME ALONE.<\/p>\n<p>If he believed the police were safe, he could have gone to them himself.<\/p>\n<p>That thought disturbed me enough to keep driving.<\/p>\n<p>The tourist neighborhoods disappeared behind me. Restaurants and waterfront hotels gave way to auto shops, laundromats, low apartment buildings, and streets where afternoon heat shimmered above cracked pavement.<\/p>\n<p>I checked my mirrors repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>No gray SUV.<\/p>\n<p>At least none I recognized.<\/p>\n<p>The address led to a three-story brick apartment building with rust around the gutters and an exterior staircase that looked older than Liam.<\/p>\n<p>I parked across the street.<\/p>\n<p>This was where my son had apparently chosen to live while someone else occupied the house I had bought him.<\/p>\n<p>Anger pushed me toward the building.<\/p>\n<p>Fear slowed me before I reached the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Apartment 3C had no name beside the buzzer.<\/p>\n<p>I climbed to the third floor and knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I knocked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my ear close to the door.<\/p>\n<p>A lock moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened perhaps three inches.<\/p>\n<p>One brown eye appeared through the gap.<\/p>\n<p>Then the door opened wider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything I had prepared to say vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Liam had lost weight.<\/p>\n<p>Dark circles lay beneath his eyes. His hair had grown longer than he usually tolerated, and he wore a faded college sweatshirt I remembered buying him during his senior year of high school.<\/p>\n<p>But what frightened me most was not how he looked.<\/p>\n<p>It was the way he looked behind me before letting me inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone follow you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached for him. \u201cLiam\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom. Did anybody follow you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father said almost the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled me inside and locked the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then he slid a chair beneath the handle.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment contained almost nothing. A mattress lay directly on the floor. A folding table stood near the window.
