secrets.

Not manipulated.

Mine.

That evening, Isaac asked to meet.

Not at the mansion.

Not at my hotel.

A public park near the river.

Neutral.

I agreed.

He was already there when I arrived.

No expensive suit.

No driver.

No performance.

Just Isaac in a dark jacket sitting on a bench.

He stood when he saw me.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

We sat.

For a while, neither spoke.

People passed.

A woman walked a dog.

Two teenagers argued over a bicycle.

Ordinary life continued around us.

Isaac finally said, “Gregory’s statement came.”

“Yes.”

“I read all of it.”

“I didn’t.”

“That’s probably smarter.”

I looked at him.

“What did you learn?”

He considered.

“That I spent too long thinking he made me into someone.”

“And?”

“He didn’t.”

“No.”

“He used what was already there.”

“Yes.”

Isaac rubbed his hands together.

“I keep wanting to say I was manipulated.”

“You were.”

“But that became an excuse.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I don’t want it anymore.”

We sat quietly.

Then he said, “I signed the payroll letter because I knew you would help.”

“Yes.”

“I let you think there were no reasonable alternatives.”

“Yes.”

“I kept the plane because I thought your money made the sacrifice unnecessary.”

“Yes.”

“I let Mom believe I supported you because I liked how it made me look.”

“Yes.”

“And I hit you because I believed your love made it safe for me to lose control with you.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

He stared toward the river.

“I hate the person described by those sentences.”

I said nothing.

“But hating him isn’t the same as changing him.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“My therapist said shame wants punishment because punishment is fast.”

That caught my attention.

“What does change want?”

“Time.”

I nodded.

“That sounds inconvenient.”

“Very.”

A faint smile.

Then gone.

“I’m not going to ask you to wait.”

“Good.”

“I’m not going to ask for another chance.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“I want one.”

Honest.

“But wanting one doesn’t entitle me to it.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I’m going to keep doing the work whether you leave or stay.”

“That’s the only version that matters.”

“I know.”

We watched the river.

After several minutes, Isaac asked, “Are you divorcing me?”

There it was.

The question I had avoided.

Not because I lacked courage.

Because I had needed enough distance to know whether the answer belonged to anger or judgment.

“I’m not coming back to the marriage we had.”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

“That marriage is over.”

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

I continued.

“I don’t know yet whether there is another one possible after it.”

He looked at me.

Hope appeared.

I held up a hand.

“Do not turn that into a promise.”

He stopped himself.

“Right.”

“I mean exactly what I said.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“If we ever try again, it will not be because we were already married.”

“Yes.”

“It will not be because your family needs stability.”

“Yes.”

“Or because the company ties us together.”

“Yes.”

“Or because you’re sorry.”

His eyes reddened.

“Yes.”

“It would have to be because after enough time, I decide the man you became is someone I want to choose again.”

He breathed slowly.

“And if you don’t?”

“Then you accept it.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

That answer mattered more than any apology he had given.

We remained on the bench until the light faded.

Before leaving, he said, “Can I ask one thing?”

“What?”

“Will you tell me if you decide?”

I almost smiled.

“Yes.”

“That’s fair.”

He stood.

So did I.

He did not hug me.

Did not touch my arm.

Did not ask permission for affection I was not offering.

He simply said good night.

Then walked away.

I watched him go.

Not with longing.

Not relief.

Something quieter.

Possibility without obligation.

When I returned to the hotel, Farrah had sent the draft financial separation framework.

I opened it.

For the first time, the company’s future did not depend on my marriage.

That felt like freedom.

The next morning, Daniel called.

“Mom—I mean Amanda—asked me to help choose what goes into the archive.”

I noticed the correction.

“You going?”

“Yes.”

“How do you feel about that?”

“Like I should charge admission.”

I laughed.

Then he became serious.

“She asked if Rebecca’s letter can be displayed.”

“What did you say?”

“That it’s my decision.”

“Good.”

“I said yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom refused to erase me.”

His voice softened.

“She deserves that part remembered.”

We spoke about the education fund.

Applications.

Apprenticeships.

Engineering scholarships.

Daniel wanted the first award named after Rebecca.

Isaac wanted the second after Charles.

Amanda asked whether one could be named after Margaret.

Daniel had not decided.

“Take your time.”

“I will.”

After the call, I drove to the mansion.

Alone.

Amanda had begun packing.

Boxes lined the foyer.

She found me standing in the dining room.

The exact place.

She looked at my face.

The bruise was gone.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Not for one thing.

For everything.

I believed she meant it.

I also knew meaning it did not restore what existed before.

“I know.”

She looked around.

“I’m leaving Tuesday.”

“I heard.”

“I signed the occupancy termination.”

“Good.”

She swallowed.

“I wanted to ask whether I could take the dining table.”

I stared at it.

The table where the argument began.

The table where she told me I had nothing without Isaac.

I almost laughed.

“Why?”

“It belonged to my mother.”

That changed things.

“Do you have documentation?”

Amanda blinked.

Then smiled faintly.

“I deserved that.”

“Yes.”

“I do.”

“Then take it.”

Her eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

“It’s yours.”

Simple.

Ownership.

Fact.

No power game required.

Amanda touched the chair.

“Do you hate this room?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“I hated what happened in it.”

She nodded.

“That makes sense.”

I looked toward the doorway.

“I think I’m selling the house.”

Amanda closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“All right.”

No argument.

No claim.

No accusation.

That surprised me.

“Are you sure?”

“It isn’t mine.”

The words came quietly.

“And maybe none of us needs to keep living inside what happened here.”

I looked around.

For once, I agreed.

That evening, I told Farrah to begin preparing the property for eventual sale after the archive structure was finalized.

Not immediately.

No fire sale.

No dramatic expulsion.

A clean process.

She asked, “Certain?”

“Yes.”

“What changed?”

“Nothing.”

I looked toward the mansion from the driveway.

“That’s why.”

The house no longer needed to decide anything for us.

The next day, Gregory’s first formal court appearance was scheduled.

Amanda would attend with counsel.

Isaac would not.

Daniel would not.

Neither would I.

Gregory had occupied enough of our lives.

The legal system could take him from instead of ruling around them.

And Isaac would either become someone different or he would not.

None of that was mine to control anymore.

I stood outside the mansion as dusk settled over the grounds.

Then I locked the door behind me.

Not because I was leaving forever.

Not yet.

Because this time, I was the one deciding when it opened again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: The Mansion Went on the Market, but One Offer Forced Daniel to Decide Whether
