His mother getting sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard Isaac swallow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to complain Dad worked too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth things can hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That phrase again.<\/p>\n<p>This time it did not irritate me.<\/p>\n<p>Because he was learning when it belonged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I don\u2019t know whether you\u2019ll ever forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said forgiveness isn\u2019t a strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat definitely sounds like Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also said if I spend all my time trying to get you back, I\u2019ll just be making my guilt your responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him I hated having a brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac did too.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause apparently hitting your wife is not a financial restructuring problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The humor disappeared from both our voices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to understand why control became violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not telling you so you\u2019ll reconsider anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you because I should have done it without needing this to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all I gave him.<\/p>\n<p>It was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Later that evening, Farrah arrived with another update.<\/p>\n<p>The forensic examiner had strengthened the findings.<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s signature was almost certainly not genuine.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s signature was highly likely not genuine.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac\u2019s disputed board consent was also inconsistent with authentic samples.<\/p>\n<p>Three questionable signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Three people.<\/p>\n<p>One person with access to all their records.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory.<\/p>\n<p>But the most interesting discovery was not handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>It was the printer.<\/p>\n<p>The board consent carried microscopic printer-identification patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah\u2019s team had traced the model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they narrow it further?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>Listened.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original printer maintenance logs were recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe printer used for the consent was serviced the same week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe technician recorded a page count.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they compare the count\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may be able to establish when the document was printed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The results came an hour later.<\/p>\n<p>The consent purportedly signed by Isaac two days after Charles\u2019s funeral had not been printed then.<\/p>\n<p>It had been printed three weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>After the date shown on the document.<\/p>\n<p>After Daniel had already surrendered his shares.<\/p>\n<p>After Gregory had begun reorganizing the debt.<\/p>\n<p>The board consent was not merely suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>Its physical production contradicted its stated date.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Farrah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it to his counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Amanda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang before she could.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sounded broken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s represented. He shouldn\u2019t be discussing this casually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if he goes down, I go with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farrah moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he threaten you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda forced herself to repeat it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018You wanted the problem solved. Don\u2019t pretend now that you cared how I solved it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you record the call?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny voicemail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farrah wrote quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not speak with him again without counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda whispered, \u201cHe\u2019s right about one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask enough questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Charles said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew the refinancing was being delayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew we expected you to save us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I swear I didn\u2019t know Gregory forged anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I answered without anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that may be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying harder.<\/p>\n<p>Belief was not absolution.<\/p>\n<p>She understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Isaac hate me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a question for Isaac.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She seemed surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t trust you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want the relationship we had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I will never again let your fear dictate my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda whispered, \u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she finally did.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, Farrah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounded almost healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t ruin it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then an email arrived from Gregory\u2019s counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Formal.<\/p>\n<p>Brief.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory was prepared to provide a full accounting of the disputed transactions.<\/p>\n<p>But only if Amanda participated too.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah read the final line aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vale maintains that Mrs. Hartwell was not merely a beneficiary of the relevant actions but an active participant in the original plan.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the message.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda had admitted using me.<\/p>\n<p>She had admitted lying about Charles\u2019s mental clarity.<\/p>\n<p>She had admitted helping delay refinancing.<\/p>\n<p>But Gregory was now claiming something more.<\/p>\n<p>And if he had evidence, the worst part of Amanda\u2019s confession might still be ahead.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27964\">Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Gregory Produced Amanda\u2019s Signed Instructions, but One Missing Page Changed Who Had Actually Designed the Scheme Against Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remained in the hotel parking garage with both hands wrapped around the steering wheel.
