the apology something else to cover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel quietly left the room.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah followed.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac and I remained.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The question again.<\/p>\n<p>The old one.<\/p>\n<p>What am I supposed to do?<\/p>\n<p>But this time I answered differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to stop asking me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you were going to fix what you could without using me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind out what belongs to the company. Fix it. Restore what Daniel lost. Deal with your mother. Cooperate with the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no shortcut through us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019ll start with everything that doesn\u2019t require you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left.<\/p>\n<p>I sat alone for several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then Farrah returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m retiring the phrase \u2018Are you okay?\u2019 because clearly none of us are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite myself, I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Only once.<\/p>\n<p>It helped.<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>He had found another archive.<\/p>\n<p>Not Gregory\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>An old backup from his personal computer.<\/p>\n<p>One unsent draft email.<\/p>\n<p>Addressed to Gregory.<\/p>\n<p>Subject: Isaac\u2019s Marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had written:<\/p>\n<p>I found out what you and Amanda are doing. Leave the girl out of the company\u2019s problems. If Isaac marries her, let it be because he loves her, not because you think her family can repair our mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had known.<\/p>\n<p>At least eventually.<\/p>\n<p>The draft continued.<\/p>\n<p>I will accept the refinancing proposal.
