12 – Rebecca’s Letter Exposed Gregory’s Failed Plan, While Amanda’s Sudden Return Forced Isaac to Choose Between Truth and Family Loyalty

Daniel brought Rebecca’s papers to Farrah’s office the following morning.

He carried them himself.

Two banker’s boxes.

Both worn at the corners.

Both sealed with old packing tape.

No one opened them until an independent records specialist arrived and documented the contents.

Daniel watched every movement.

I understood why.

For years, other people had decided what parts of his family history he was allowed to keep.

He would not surrender control casually again.

The letter from Gregory lay inside a folder labeled CHARLES.

Rebecca had preserved it carefully.

The paper was yellowing at the edges.

Gregory’s language was polite.

Almost generous.

He described a “final family settlement.”

Six hundred thousand dollars.

In exchange, Rebecca would sign a declaration stating Charles intended Daniel to have no continuing interest in the company.

The payment amount matched the transfers in the blue ledger.

Farrah compared dates.

“The money moved before she signed anything.”

Daniel frowned.

“She never signed.”

“So why send it?”

“Maybe Gregory hoped payment would pressure her.”

“Or maybe the transfers served another purpose.”

We looked at the records.

Rebecca had received the funds.

That much was clear.

But Daniel found corresponding bank records showing most of the money left again within days.

“Where did it go?” I asked.

The specialist traced the account number.

Daniel became very still.

“To Charles.”

Not directly.

Through another family holding entity.

Rebecca had returned nearly all of it.

She kept only a small amount.

Twenty thousand.

Daniel touched the page.

“That was probably medical.”

His mother had been ill then.

“She hated taking money.”

Farrah examined the note written across Gregory’s proposed declaration.

Charles never asked me to erase our son.

Beneath it, Rebecca had written another line.

Return everything except the hospital bills.

Daniel stared at his mother’s handwriting.

“She knew.”

“Knew what?” Isaac asked from the doorway.

None of us had heard him enter.

Daniel’s face hardened slightly.

Farrah looked at me.

I had not invited Isaac.

He must have learned where we were through Martin.

“I said I wanted my mother’s papers reviewed independently.”

Isaac stopped.

“You’re right.”

He took one step backward.

“I’m sorry.”

That mattered.

A week earlier, Isaac would have argued that he had every right to enter.

Now he waited.

Daniel looked at him for several seconds.

Then nodded toward an empty chair.

“You can stay.”

Isaac sat.

Farrah summarized only what Daniel had authorized her to share.

The transfers.

Gregory’s proposed declaration.

Rebecca’s refusal.

The returned money.

Isaac listened without interrupting.

When Farrah finished, he asked, “Why would Gregory care whether Daniel had rights?”

Daniel answered before anyone else.

“Because someone wanted the company clean.”

“Clean?”

“No competing heir.”

Isaac looked uncomfortable.

“For me.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel’s voice was restrained.

“I don’t know yet.”

That distinction mattered.

We were all learning not to fill missing facts with convenient stories.

Farrah reviewed Charles’s blue ledger alongside Rebecca’s bank statements.

A pattern emerged.

Gregory repeatedly acted as intermediary between Charles, Amanda, and Rebecca.

Sometimes legitimately.

Sometimes questionably.

He had become indispensable because he understood everyone’s secrets.

“People like that gain power by becoming necessary,” Farrah said.

Daniel looked at her.

“You think he manipulated all of them?”

“I think he positioned himself where nobody could make a move without him knowing.”

That sounded right.

Perhaps Gregory had not created every problem.

Perhaps he had simply learned to profit from managing them.

My phone rang.

Amanda.

Every person in the room looked at me.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“I need to see Isaac.”

Isaac stood.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Mom?”

Amanda inhaled sharply.

“Isaac.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m coming home.”

“Why did you leave?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“Because Gregory told me to.”

The room changed.

Farrah leaned forward.

“What exactly did he tell you?”

Amanda heard her.

“I’m not speaking to her.”

“You are if you want help,” Isaac said.

Amanda became quiet.

I saw Daniel watching him carefully.

Finally she said, “Gregory said the documents would make everything look worse than it was.”

“Did you take them?”

“No.”

“Did Gregory?”

“Yes.”

Isaac closed his eyes.

“Why did you let him?”

“He said he needed to review them.”

“After counsel had already reviewed them?”

“I panicked.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

That word again.

Amanda had built half her worst decisions on panic.

“Where did you go?” Isaac asked.

“A hotel.”

“With Gregory?”

“No.”

“Does he know where you are?”

“He did.”

Past tense.

Farrah caught it.

“What changed?”

Amanda’s voice became smaller.

“He told me last night not to contact him again.”

“Why?”

“He said I had become a liability.”

Isaac laughed once.

The sound was bitter.

“For him?”

“Yes.”

Amanda started crying.

Not loudly.

“I need to come home.”

Isaac looked at me.

Not for permission.

For perspective.

I said nothing.

This decision belonged to him.

He looked toward Daniel.

Then back at the phone.

“You can come.”

Amanda breathed out.

“But there are conditions.”

She became quiet.

“You don’t touch any records.”

No answer.

“You don’t call Gregory.”

Still nothing.

“You answer questions honestly.”

Her voice hardened.

“I will not be interrogated in my own home.”

Isaac closed his eyes.

Daniel looked away.

The old pattern was returning instantly.

Amanda’s fear became control the moment she sensed weakness.

Isaac opened his eyes again.

“Then don’t come.”

The room went still.

Even Farrah looked surprised.

Amanda did not speak.

Isaac continued.

“You said you need to see me.”

“I do.”

“Then come and tell the truth.”

“I am your mother.”

“I know.”

That no longer ended the argument.

Amanda disconnected.

Isaac lowered the phone.

His hand trembled.

Daniel asked quietly, “You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

Isaac almost smiled.

Then my phone rang again.

This time it was the mansion’s security service.

Amanda had entered the property.

So had someone else.

“Who?” I asked.

The operator gave a name.

Gregory Vale.

Farrah stood immediately.

“He told Amanda not to contact him.”

“Apparently he changed his mind.”

Isaac was already moving toward the door.

Farrah stopped him.

“Wait.”

“That’s my house.”

I looked at him.

He caught himself.

“The house.”

That small correction almost broke my heart.

Farrah called Mr. Hale and her investigator.

“I don’t want anyone confronting Gregory alone.”

Isaac shook his head.

“I’m going.”

“So are we.”

Daniel stood.

“I’m coming too.”

Isaac looked at him.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

They left in separate cars.

I rode with Farrah.

The drive felt longer than it was.

When we arrived, Gregory’s car sat near the front entrance.

Amanda’s was beside it.

The front door stood open.

Isaac had arrived moments before us but waited on the steps.

That was another good decision.

Farrah’s investigator entered first after confirming there was no immediate sign of danger.

Then we followed.

Voices came from Charles’s study.

Gregory and Amanda were arguing.

“You said the recording didn’t exist,” Amanda hissed.

Gregory answered, “I said Thomas wouldn’t use it.”

“You said this was handled.”

“It was until your daughter-in-law started digging.”

I stopped in the hallway.

Isaac flinched at the contempt in Gregory’s voice.

Then Amanda said, “She knows about the four million.”

Gregory swore.

“She knows Charles refused?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?” Amanda demanded.

A drawer slammed.

“I need the ledger.”

“They have it.”

Silence.

“The original?”

“Yes.”

Gregory cursed again.

Farrah looked at the investigator.

Everything was being documented.

Then Gregory said the sentence that changed everything.

“If they connect the ledger to Rebecca’s payments, we have a problem.”

Daniel went completely still.

Isaac looked at him.

Amanda’s voice dropped.

“You told me Rebecca signed.”

“I told you she would.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No, Amanda. It isn’t.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Gregory continued.

“Your husband was dying. Daniel was circling. Lenders were panicking. Somebody had to stabilize things.”

“You forged Charles’s signature.”

The words came from Amanda.

Clear.

Direct.

Everyone in the hallway froze.

Gregory answered too quickly.

“Lower your voice.”

“You told me Charles had approved it.”

“I told you what you needed to know.”

Amanda’s breathing became audible.

“You forged it.”

Gregory did not deny it.

Instead he said, “And it saved you.”

Farrah’s investigator looked at us.

This was no longer inference.

Amanda whispered, “You said Charles would have agreed eventually.”

“He might have.”

“He told you no.”

Gregory’s tone hardened.

“He was dying.”

“That didn’t make you him.”

Silence.

Then something crashed.

Isaac moved instinctively.

The investigator blocked him.

“Wait.”

Gregory spoke again.

“You benefited too.”

Amanda replied, “I never asked you to forge his name.”

“No. You just begged me to save your investments before Isaac found out.”

Isaac closed his eyes.

The truth was uglier than he had wanted.

Not because Amanda ordered the forgery.

Because her secrecy created the opportunity.

Gregory continued.

“You wanted the debt gone. I made it go away.”

“By putting it on the company.”

“Which survived.”

“Because she saved it.”

Gregory laughed bitterly.

“She?”

Amanda did not answer.

Gregory understood.

“You mean Isaac’s wife.”

“Yes.”

His tone changed.

“So that’s what this is.”

Footsteps moved inside the study.

The investigator stepped forward just as Gregory appeared in the doorway.

He stopped.

His face changed when he saw us.

Amanda stood behind him.

She looked twenty years older than she had a week earlier.

Gregory recovered quickly.

“This is private property.”

I met his eyes.

“No.”

He recognized the correction.

Of course he did.

Farrah stepped forward.

“We need to discuss the removed records.”

Gregory smiled thinly.

“I have nothing to say.”

The investigator said, “You may want counsel.”

“I am counsel.”

Farrah’s expression did not move.

“Not for yourself.”

That erased the smile.

Daniel stepped into view.

Gregory’s face tightened.

“Daniel.”

“Gregory.”

“You always did know how to arrive at inconvenient moments.”

Daniel looked toward Amanda.

“Did you know he tried to pay my mother to erase me?”

Amanda stared at him.

“What?”

The shock looked genuine.

Gregory immediately said, “Don’t answer.”

Amanda turned toward him.

“You paid Rebecca?”

“It was part of estate resolution.”

“She never signed.”

Gregory said nothing.

Amanda looked at Daniel.

“How much?”

“Six hundred thousand.”

Her face drained.

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel’s anger shifted.

Not gone.

Redirected.

Gregory moved toward the hallway.

The investigator blocked his path without touching him.

Farrah said, “Where are Charles’s files?”

Gregory gave her a cold look.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“No.”

Amanda suddenly spoke.

“His office.”

Gregory turned.

“Amanda.”

She looked at him.

Something had broken.

Perhaps loyalty.

Perhaps fear.

Perhaps the realization that Gregory had used her as thoroughly as she used everyone else.

“He keeps a private records room behind his conference office.”

Gregory stared at her.

“You stupid woman.”

Isaac moved before anyone else could stop him.

Not to strike Gregory.

He stepped between Gregory and Amanda.

“Don’t talk to her like that.”

The hypocrisy was not lost on him.

I saw it cross his face.

A man who had struck his wife was defending his mother from words.

But he did not escalate.

He simply stood there.

Gregory looked at him with contempt.

“You have no idea what your parents did to keep you comfortable.”

Isaac’s face tightened.

“No.”

He glanced at me.

“But I’m starting to.”

Gregory left only after Farrah documented his departure and instructed counsel to preserve all relevant materials.

No one pretended the matter was over.

Amanda sank into one of Charles’s chairs.

Daniel remained near the doorway.

For the first time, she looked at him without hostility.

“You look like him.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“I’ve been told.”

She swallowed.

“I was cruel to you.”

“Yes.”

No softening.

No rescue.

Amanda deserved that honesty.

“I thought if you disappeared, everything would stay intact.”

Daniel looked around the study.

“Did it?”

Amanda closed her eyes.

“No.”

Isaac sat opposite her.

“Mom, I need the whole truth.”

“I’ve told you.”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“You told me the parts that made you look less responsible.”

Amanda flinched.

He continued.

“Dad warned me about being protected from consequences.”

She stared at him.

“You heard his recording.”

“Yes.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I loved him.”

“I know.”

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“I was trying to save our life.”

“And you hurt people to do it.”

She looked at Daniel.

Then me.

Then Isaac.

Her voice became barely audible.

“Yes.”

That was the first time she had said it without excuse.

Farrah’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, then looked toward me.

“What?”

Her expression had changed.

“Gregory’s office is being secured.”

“And?”

“He contacted someone immediately after leaving.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

Isaac frowned.

“Why would he call Martin?”

Farrah put her phone down.

“Because Gregory told him to destroy the blue ledger.”

Daniel stared at her.

“But Martin doesn’t have it anymore.”

“I know.”

“That means Gregory doesn’t know we moved it.”

“Yes.”

My pulse quickened.

Farrah continued.

“Martin recorded the call.”

I looked toward Charles’s study.

His warnings.

Rebecca’s refusal.

Thomas’s copies.

The forged approval.

For years, Gregory had survived because everyone around him held only one piece of the story.

Now those pieces were coming together.

But one question remained.

Why had Gregory worked so hard to erase Daniel’s rights if Amanda never asked him to?

Farrah seemed to be thinking the same thing.

She opened the blue ledger photographs again.

Then stopped at one line.

“What?”

She enlarged an entry.

A payment from Gregory’s consulting firm.

Destination: a private investment partnership.

Isaac stared at it.

“Whose is that?”

Farrah searched.

The result appeared seconds later.

Her face went still.

Gregory Vale was not merely Amanda’s lawyer.

Years before Charles died, he had quietly acquired an economic interest in one of the company’s largest lenders.

Daniel leaned closer.

“If Daniel’s shares had remained in place,” I said slowly, “and the company entered restructuring…”

Farrah finished the thought.

“Daniel might have challenged transactions Gregory profited from.”

Isaac looked between us.

“So Gregory needed Daniel gone.”

“Maybe.”

Farrah held up a hand.

“Still not proven.”

Amanda suddenly looked terrified.

“There’s something I never told anyone.”

Every person in the room turned toward her.

“What?” Isaac asked.

She stared at Daniel.

“After your mother refused Gregory’s settlement, he came to me.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What did he say?”

Amanda’s lips trembled.

“He said Rebecca had changed her mind.”

“She hadn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“What did he give you?”

Amanda looked toward Farrah.

“A document.”

“What document?”

“A signed declaration.”

Daniel went still.

“What did it say?”

Amanda’s voice cracked.

“That Rebecca agreed Daniel had no rights to Charles’s company.”

Daniel looked like he had been struck.

“My mother never signed that.”

Amanda whispered, “Then Gregory forged her name too.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Amanda’s Last Hidden Document Forced Daniel to Confront a Second
