bitter laugh.

“That advice is mostly for myself.”

The final minutes were personal.

Charles told Isaac he loved him.

Told Daniel the recording stopped.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Isaac finally stood and walked to the window.

Daniel remained seated.

Farrah ended the playback officially and don’t.”

That surprised him.

“Everyone has places where they’re blind.”

Isaac laughed bitterly.

“Mine seem destroyed.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Because after Charles died, Gregory came to my office and asked for it.”

“What did you do?”

“I gave him a copy.”

“Not the original?”

“No.”

Farrah leaned forward.

“Where is the original?”

Martin exhaled.

“Off-site storage.”

Every head turned.

“Can you access it?”

“Yes.”

“Do not go alone.”

Martin became defensive.

“I’m not in danger.”

“We don’t know that.”

He sighed.

“All it.”

I looked at him.

“Don’t explain it to me.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Good.”

“I’m explaining it to myself.”

“That’s where it belongs.”

He nodded.

“I thought if I could control that moment, everything would stop changing.”

I held his gaze.

“And you chose me as the person easiest to hurt.”

His face went pale.

“Yes.”

I appreciated the honesty.

I did not reward it.

Daniel stood across the room and pretended not to hear.

Farrah’s laptop chimed.

Martin had reached the storage facility.

Twenty minutes later, we received photographs.

A blue clothbound ledger.

Old.

Handwritten.

Charles’s initials inside the cover.

Farrah asked Martin to photograph specific pages before transporting the original.

The first entries appeared routine.

Payments.

Accounts.

Dates.

Then Gregory Vale’s name appeared.

Repeatedly.

Payments to his consulting firm.

Payments to another entity.

And transfers involving Amanda’s property vehicle.

The amounts were significant.

Farrah traced one line with her finger on the screen.

“Look at this.”

A transfer left Amanda’s vehicle.

Entered an intermediary account.

Then moved into Gregory’s firm.

Two days later, Gregory’s firm sent money elsewhere.

“To whom?” Isaac asked.

Farrah enlarged the recipient name.

No one recognized it.

Daniel did.

His face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?” I asked.

He pointed.

“That company belonged to my mother.”

The room went silent.

Rebecca Mercer.

Daniel’s mother.

Charles’s former partner.

The woman Amanda claimed had no connection to the family after Daniel was born.

“Why would Gregory send money to your mother?” Isaac asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Farrah reviewed additional entries.

There were three transfers.

All before Rebecca died.

All from Gregory-linked accounts.

Totaling nearly six hundred thousand dollars.

Daniel stared at the numbers.

“My mother never told me.”

“Could it have been support from Charles?”

“No.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because Dad paid through a different structure.”

He pointed at another line.

“This was separate.”

Farrah sat back.

“We need Rebecca’s records.”

Daniel’s expression closed.

“They were mostly slightly.

Daniel softened.

“I’m sorry. But she was my mother.”

“I understand.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I want her things reviewed by someone who isn’t trying to protect Charles, Amanda, or me.”

I understood immediately.

“You want Farrah.”

“Yes.”

Farrah nodded.

“I can arrange an independent stayed with Farrah.

At 7:18, Gregory finally called.

Not Farrah.

Me.

I answered.

“You’ve caused enough damage,” he said.

His voice
