information.”

“Yes.”

“And Gregory knew.”

“Possibly.”

I looked back toward Thomas’s house.

“What about Amanda?”

Farrah did not answer immediately.

“She may have been the beneficiary.”

“That isn’t the same as proving she orchestrated it.”

“No.”

My phone buzzed.

Isaac.

I answered.

“Well?”

I looked at Farrah.

She nodded.

“Your father left a recording.”

Isaac stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?”

“We haven’t listened yet.”

“Is it for me?”

“According to Thomas, yes.”

“I’m coming.”

“Not yet.”

His voice broke.

“You can’t keep me away from my father’s last words.”

“I’m not.”

I softened my tone.

“But we need the recording preserved properly first.”

He was silent.

Then he said, “What did Dad know?”

I looked at the unsigned copies in Farrah’s evidence bag.

“He knew someone was trying to move Amanda’s debt onto the company.”

Isaac made a low sound.

“And?”

“He refused.”

Another silence.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the signature on the final approval matters more than ever.”

Farrah received an email.

She opened it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She turned the screen toward me.

The hospital had confirmed Charles was continuously admitted on the date in question.

No authorized discharge.

No off-site appointment.

No record that he left the hospital grounds.

The downtown witness statement claiming Charles signed the paper in person at 3:52 p.m. could not be true.

Isaac heard me inhale.

“What happened?”

I looked at the record.

Then at the forged-looking signature.

Then at Thomas’s copies showing Charles’s refusal.

“It means,” I said quietly, “someone created a false signing record.”

<a
